On the sea

In the lovely summer, I come to the coast again, in the Yantai Hill in the north of China, and again kiss the azure water of the sea. Sitting on the rocks wreathed with flowers, I read the work of the seawith avarice—a book showing itself between the sky and the earth, the Revelation throughout the ancient and the present—which is, to me, an everlasting classic authored by nature.

I, with the sea hunger, which has been accumulated for such a long time and almost ignited on my way from a great distance, peruse the sprays and the glistening light reflected and the hazy mist splashed over the surface when waves of wave rush in, read delightfully the blue words gliding from the heaven line by line and dotted with thunder-like white sprays. When I open my arms, the heavy sea fragrance as well as the surging contents and the affection and the great deep philosophies of this work all rush into me.

I turn over the blue cover of the book of the sea before I enter into the inner world. The faint tinkles of the bells necked the horses of Apollo’s golden carriage mixed with the music of the sea come to my ears and a gorgeous seascape to my eyes. In this stage, the white gooses in Anderson’s fairy tales are dancing elegantly; a famous Roman general Antony and Cleopatra,Queen of Egypt in the drama of Antony and Cleopatra, are fighting on the sea battlefield, with their love and hatred blended; a flock of iron-feathered seagulls changed from the bird Jingwei of resurrection are in search of the branch thrown into the sea in the past; a herd of horses drawn by Xu Beihong,a well-known painter good at horse painting, are roaring towards the sky through this blue prairie; the keys caressed by the pianist Schubert are jumping up and down like blinking stars in the tips of the waves…

Just at this time, an amazing change is happening in me: something beautiful which left me should return while something haunting which incapacitated me to get rid of disappear. I feel many an up of something as well as down of the else, without knowing what is what, just like an unspeakable mystery. What I can sense is my world is enlarging as well as my breast is spreading fantastically, to the boundless distance, to the line where the sea meets the sky, in which way my heart, meets the sky, the sea and the hidden stars and moon. This moment, the sudden wave of ecstasy is rushing into the surface and past my chest: how wonderful my life in this land is and how affectionate this land embraced with the sea is!

At the moment I find what happened in me inexplicable, however, I can hear this blue Revelation tell me, “Do you know what is happiness? If you want to win it, please continue to open your heart to feel the sea, feel the freedom, feel the boundless vastness, feel the endless depth.

What an incredibly ancient book of sea I am reading is!

It was a billion years that the primitive ocean took to evolve from waterless to full. How genius magnificence it is! Such a magnificent tome across the heaven and the earth, such a classic through a billion years of accumulating, conceiving and sucking the breast milk of the sky and the earth, such a book with abundance of broad and profound wisdom, who could be possibly able to understand it to the full in his limited living days? None!

Some read in you grandness, some loneliness, some love and some hatred, some in search of life and some death. Those heroes going through the sea, those failure-struck reformers ending up throwing themselves into the sea, those adventurers riding the surging tides and marching towards the other shore, those scholars diving into the deep to excavating the ancient fossils, those marines with silk ribbons fluttering in their ears, those athletes driving the sails so tenaciously as to show their nature of power, and those desperate pirates who rely on your powerful strength, they all gathered in you and regard you as their life stage of fighting.

You, the sea, lives a double-structured life: tragedy and comedy, serious drama and farce, front and back, morning tide and night tide, being deep and being shallow, coral and reef, surge and ripple, spray and foam, volcano and hot spring, giant whale and tiny fish, violence and tenderness, clearness and obscurity, roar and hum, sunrise and sunset, birth and death—all clash and interweave with each other in your broad chest.

O! you are the nature of two faces as what Victor Hugo said, a well-known French writer, aren’t you?

In the past long times of unrest, no matter how those countless rivers tried to dirty you with yellow mud, how those wild wind gusts with land dust tried to attack your magnificence, how those corpses of huge whales and shark flocks tried to poison your fragrance, you have always been you, without being changed ever: your waves are lively as it should be, your glistening light dazzling, your seawater limpid, aren’t you? In the shallow part of you, I distinctly see the seabed with the sands, rocks and flowing kelp.

O, my sea! Your grand work will never be contaminated as well as your gorgeous literary talent ebb away. Eventually, I come to the spirit of you—a great power, a power overshadowing the storm at sea, a power of unparalleled settlement and preclusion, a power displaying a blue spectacle of self-overcoming.

I read the sea, from the shallow to the deep, from the surface to the fascinating underwater world. However, I am bemused by the deep philosophy beyond my understanding in the deepest point of this sea of book.

A great many scientists, engineers and adventures with both knowledge and courage, as I know, are exploring the sea as well, whose eyes are like rays of torches through the black abyss to lighten the seafloor as if at twilight. All human beings are trying to crack the mysteries underwater, brows furrowed: where is the crystal palace and where is the forest? Where is the native place of the volcano and petroleum? How did creatures multiply in the Paleozoic Era? What ups and downs and vicissitudes did the Cambrian Age witness? What kinds of breath-gripping stories of life and death happened in Ordovician and Silurian Period? What sort of great revolutionary leap did the organic evolution have?

I am reading the depth which my apprehension cannot reach. Hence, sitting on the rocks among flowers, facing the waves, I ask a string of questions overflowing from my rolling blood vessels. I understand, as long as people can solve those sea mysteries and come to understand the immortal wisdom, they would create a greater life and make the world three times wealthier than the old one.

It is true that I’m puzzled by Sea, however, I know, that today’s Sea was once changed from lands and fields, was under the reign of cone-shaped animals and was occupied by the fierce sea snakes and sea dragons. Behold! The bleak world of waves and tides has changed into another human world with hustle and bustle. I read the Sea, the colorful sails flapping before my eyes, mighty fleets, the gigantic ferries as tall as storeyed buildings, the red and white tents lying on the beach and the males and females lying there to bathe in the sunshine, and I believe that, twenty years later, the Sea people cannot understand will show another different magnificence, colorfulness and harmony between the Sea itself and human.

The great books are all the time updating, enriching themselves and evolving without the slightest stop. I have pondered for thousands of times that why Sea has stay new and imperishable forever. But now,I come to understand: because he himself is powerful, healthy and flowing unyieldingly.

Farewell, my sea, my grand Revelation in my heart, the everlasting classic! Today, in you, I feel the freedom, power and abundant depth as well as my ignorance, poverty and weakness. Even so, I would like to follow either your cool tides or warm currents flowing forward and downward, to explore new power and the unknown and to live my life to the fullest and renew my soul!
