The universe is taking care of you---another way of saying "塞翁失马,焉知非福"
The package I got reminded me of the time I had in England.
I used to live with muslin friends whose devout faith touched me deeply. However, probably for the lack of understanding at that time, I found their expressions sometimes unfathomable. Looking back now, I realized what they tried to express was not in any way against our culture.
I insisted on staying in England while covid-19 was rapidly sweeping through poor great Britain. As a result, I was housebound because of the national lockdown. And the bitterness of solitude started to erode my health. I was undergoing severe weight loss when I was stuck in my cramped "prison" for finishing my dissertation.
The silence of loneliness, excruciating as it was, was slowly driving me mad. One day, as I remember, I was in a bit of mod when I received a phone call from one of my muslin friends. I could not help bursting out into tears when he said to me " you are not appreciating what you have. Do you know that the universe is taking care of you?"
"What do you mean?" I was irritated "you don't know how it feels to be alone, because you are always around people, because you don't care whether others would get infected, because..." I stopped, feeling I had been rather harsh on him.
He was silent for a long while before saying rather weakly: "you will know one day. The universe is taking care of you."
I suppose this "the universe is taking care of you" must have touched something deep within so that rather than be het up with those words, I felt somewhat consoled. As if some magic was working on me.
Nevertheless, I came to realize what he said about the situation might be summarized into those eight Chinese characters "塞翁失马,焉知非福". The universe is indeed taking care of me through various experiences in life. Without which I could not become who I am now, and the growth in independence could never have happened if I had not struggled with that prolonged confinement.
Those eight characters account for the core of their faith in God. Because they always trust in God, his faithfulness, love, and care. No matter what happened, God's love is unchangeable.
