Today is Monday.

Papa had a shop not far from the river in the basement of an old warehouse. To get into the place, the children had to climb down a dangerously narrow wooden staircase with no supporting banisters. It could not stop the children going there because they found the junk shop was fascinating. The musty, damp smell there was unpleasant, but the children liked it. In the winter, the little stove glowed fiery red in a vain effort to heat such a huge place. Papa kept a teakettle filled all day so that the peddlers in the neighbourhood might warm their insides with a hot cup of tea as they sat about and chatted. There was a lag rag compartment in the shop. One morning it was raining. The children didn't know what to do. Ella suggested them to go to Henny's chum Fanny's house and have some fun. But Henny didn't agree because she always argued with Fanny and she thought Fanny was a tattletale. Ella reminded her that the Day of Atonement was coming. On that day everyone should forgive others.
