The Best Teacher Ever 1
There is a story from many years ago of a primary school teacher. Her name was Mrs. Thompson.
And as she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children a lie.
Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same.
But that was impossible because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.
Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath.
And, Teddy could be unpleasant.

开学的第一天,她站在五年级的教室前,对孩子们撒了个谎。

It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers.
At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last.
However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.
Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners. He is a joy to be around."
His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."

His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken."
Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class."
By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself.
She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's.
His present which was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag.
Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents.
Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one quarter full of perfume.

But she stifled the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist.
Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my mom used to."
After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching reading, and writing, and arithmetic. Instead she began to teach children.

苦难有时的确能教人学会忍耐,而忍耐的确陶冶情操。但忍耐不是一种美德,它只是一种达到目的的手段,仅此而已。忍耐对那些想做大事的人来说是必要的,但在琐事中忍耐,也就同它所示一样,不是那么值得尊敬。如滑铁卢大桥,它本身没什么了不起,不过是连通泰晤士河两岸的一条通道而已,是桥两端伸展开的伦敦城才让它变得重要。
㈡我在荒野里走,几只鸟儿齐刷刷从头顶飞过,落进前面的草地。而我赶到那里查看时,只有草和地上的泥土,别的什么都没有。鸟儿一定在那个地方看到了什么,捉到、吃掉或埋掉了什么。如此说,鸟儿瞒着人不知干了多少事。它们当着你的面办这些事,你却不知这是什么事。在鸟儿面前,人都是傻子。
人觉得这个世界是由他们控制的,这里挖挖、那里建建,然而人只活在他们自己的世界里。鸟儿有鸟儿的世界。在空旷的田野上,鸟儿知道哪里有水源,哪棵树上有什么样的虫子。我们对此一无所知,虽看它们去了这里,又去了那里,但不知它们在干什么,甚至不知那只鸟是哪只鸟。
我站在窗前,看鸟儿划过来划过去,分明是不带你玩儿,你甚至不知它们玩儿什么。假如带你玩儿,也真玩儿不了。比如,它们从三楼排风的木窗格子上飞到一楼灌木丛里,人不能。多数人没这种向往,注重功利的人,没好处不去钻带刺的灌木丛。如有赏金,钻灌木对人倒不是什么难事。
我已体会出鸟儿的快乐,这跟自由有关。自由的前提是把身体和心灵收束至简,简到不影响飞行:吃的呢?有点草籽和小虫就行了,没虫子吃也不抱怨;住的地方以树林为家园,任何一个树杈都是家——其他东西概不需要,然后飞、玩儿、办事。
㈢把谁有义务不去干扰别人的自由这样一个问题,变成了一个自由在价值上排序的问题,好像谁的自由看上去高大上,谁的自由背后人多,谁就可以干掉别人的自由。
这是一种愚蠢的思维方式。按照这种思维方式去思考,一个人、一群人,甚至某种体制,要变坏一点都不难。而变坏其实就是从变蠢开始的。
㈣有了某种压迫感,是初来乍到的恓惶,还有对未来的不确定,我开始怀疑自己的选择是否正确,外面的世界很精彩,但外面的世界,我不见得能搞定。
