What is statistics? Defined as a scientific discipline devoted to the study of data(专门研究数据的学科).
What is data? Defined as a collection of numbers assigned as values to quantitative variables(定量变量) and/or characters assigned as values to qualitative variables(定性变量).
example:we have the academic record of a bunch of children in elementary school.We organize it into a spreadsheet. A data structure that has columns and rows.
Another way to define data is, it's the lowest level of abstraction, from which information and then knowledge can be derived.

The professor do research in cognitive psychology, especially in memory, attention and intelligence.
A statistic is just a quantity calculated from a sample of data, and we're going to do this a lot.
