Most people confuse ‘giving way’ with ‘right of way’. While the rules state that certain signs or situations require other road users to give way to you, this doesn’t mean that you have ‘right of way’.
'Giving way' means slowing down or stopping to avoid a collision. In fact, ‘right of way’ is a total myth!
'Right of way' implies you can charge through an intersection or similar regardless of the consequences—as if it's your right to do so.
You’ll find Give Way and Stop signs placed at intersections where extra care is needed or to tell you which vehicle has priority.
People often think that Stop signs overrule Give Way signs—this is NOT true.
Stop signs are used when it's difficult to see what's coming at an intersection.
GIVE WAY AND STOP SIGNS
Give Way and Stop signs are placed at intersections and other places where vehicles have to give way to keep traffic flowing safely and smoothly.
GIVING WAY TO PEDESTRIANS
You must give way to pedestrians crossing a road that you are turning into or entering. This rule applies at all types of intersections.
You MUST give way to pedestrians crossing a road you're turning into or entering.
HOW TO GIVE WAY WHEN FACING ANOTHER DRIVER
Vehicle A gives way to Vehicle B because Vehicle A is crossing Vehicle B's path.

Vehicle B gives way to Vehicle A because Vehicle B is crossing Vehicle A's path.

HOW TO MAKE A TURN
Turning is simple if you follow these rules. Remember to indicate before you turn.
WHEN TURNING LEFT
Drive up to the intersection and keep your vehicle as far to the left as possible.
If there is a turning lane marked with left arrows, you must use this to turn left. If there are turn lines you must follow the turn lines.
If there are no markings you can turn into any lane, provided you give way to any vehicle already in the lane.
REMEMBER
Always give way to any pedestrians crossing the road you are entering.
TURNING RIGHT
Drive up to the intersection and keep your vehicle as far right as possible.
If there is a turning lane marked with right arrows, you must use this to turn right. If there are turn lines you must follow the turn lines. If there are no markings you can turn into any lane, provided you give way to any vehicle already in the lane.
Wait for a clear path before you turn.
IF BOTH VEHICLES WANT TO TURN RIGHT
If an oncoming car wants to turn right and your paths don’t cross, neither of you has to give way because you can go at the same time.
REMEMBER
Make sure you follow the turn lines and pass right-of-centre through the intersection to avoid a collision.
RIGHT TURNS AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS
You can move into the intersection and past the Stop line if the light is green and you can do so safely.
Complete the turn if there is a safe gap in oncoming traffic.
If you’re in the intersection and the oncoming traffic continues until the lights turn yellow or red, complete the turn on the yellow or red light to clear the intersection for other cars.
WHEN MAKING A U-TURN
Give way to all vehicles and pedestrians when you’re making a U-turn.
This includes traffic facing a Stop or Give Way sign and vehicles in a slip lane.
BROKEN WHITE LINES
You may make a U-turn over a broken white line unless signed otherwised.
POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN REVERSING
GIVE WAY TO ALL OTHER ROAD USERS
People—especially small children—don't always expect a car to start reversing.
You must give way to pedestrians and all other road users when reversing.
Never reverse your vehicle suddenly!
REMEMBER TO ALWAYS CHECK BEFORE YOU REVERSE
Take extra care when reversing near an intersection or out of a driveway or parking space.
HOW TO GIVE WAY AT T-INTERSECTIONS
T-intersections are where one road meets another and stops.
T-intersections get their name because they often look like the letter 'T', but the roads don't always meet at right angles.
Let's look at a few common examples:
T-INTERSECTIONS
The examples below show three common scenarios for T-intersections.
EXAMPLE 1
Vehicle B is travelling on the continuing road, so Vehicle A has to give way.

Vehicle B gives way because it is facing a Give Way sign.

Vehicle B is leaving a continuing road, as marked by the broken lines and must give way to Vehicle A.

WHEN YOU ENTER OR LEAVE A ROAD
You must give way to vehicles, bicycle riders and pedestrians when you leave or enter any property.

You have to give way to all other vehicles when driving out from a parking spot, stopping on the side of the road or in a median strip.
Signal for at least five seconds before moving off—this gives other road users time to respond safely.

SLIP LANES
Slip lanes are common features at major intersections. They help to free up lanes for traffic going through the intersection by creating a separate lane for traffic turning left.
Vehicle B is driving onto the road from a slip lane so it must give way to all vehicles, bicycle riders and pedestrians before continuing.

You have to give way to all vehicles, bicycle riders and pedestrians on the road you're entering (except vehicles making a U-turn) when you're driving onto a road from a slip lane.

SIGNS AND RULES
Giving Way
The Give Way rules are some of the trickiest rules for new drivers to master. They help us share the road with others and keep traffic flowing safely.
This section covers the reasons why we give way and the specific rules for situations like T-intersections, overtaking, changing lanes and merging.
