- When you leave your vehicle parked downhill parallel to the curb on the right side of the road, you must turn front wheels toward the curb or toward the right to prevent the vehicle from rolling into the street.
- When two vehicles from different directions arrive at the same time at an intersection with no signs or signals, the driver on the left must allow the driver on the right to go first.
- You may turn left at a red light if you are on a one-way street and turning left onto another one-way street. Before turning, you must come to a complete stop.
- You may not pass on the right if you must drive off the pavement
- If you park next to a curb, pull close to it. You may not park more than one foot from the curb.
- When waiting to make a left turn, always keep your front wheels pointed straight ahead until you start the turn. This prevents you from being pushed into oncoming traffic if another vehicle crashes into you from behind.
- If your car stalls on the tracks and you see or hear a train coming, you should get out of the car right away and run diagonally away from the tracks in the direction of the oncoming train.
- When police, fire and rescue vehicles or ambulances approach you from behind your vehicle using a siren, flashing lights or both, you must immediately yield the right-of-way. Safely pull over to the right edge of the road and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed.
- If you must turn around on a narrow, two-way street, you are required to use the three-point turn method for safe turn around, unless prohibited.
- With any turning vehicle, the rear wheels follow a shorter path than the front wheels. The longer the vehicle is, the greater the difference will be. Trucks initially swing out before making a turn.
- At a stop sign, when you are waiting to turn right and a vehicle approaching from the left has its turn signal on, you must wait until the other driver actually starts to turn, and then start your turn.
- The eye test evaluates 1) acuity - how clearly you see; 2) peripheral vision - how far you can see to either side while looking straight ahead; 3) depth and color perception.
- When fog closes in completely, and visibility is reduced to near zero, you are advised to carefully pull as far off the road as possible, and stop. Headlights and flashing emergency signals should be used while driving in fog.
- When you come to an intersection, follow this important rule—left, right, left. Look to the left first because vehicles coming from the left are closer to you. Look to the right. Take one more look to the left before you pull out. That way you might see a vehicle you did not see the first time you looked.
- To guard against glare from the headlights of a vehicle behind you, use a day-night mirror. Adjust it before you drive.
- If you are driving on a road with three or more lanes, stay in the middle lane, except when passing another vehicle.
- Head restraints are designed to prevent neck injuries if you are hit from behind. Headrests should be adjusted so that the head restraint contacts the back of the head when there is an accident.
- Before you back up, you must be sure it is safe to do so and that it will not interfere with other traffic. It is a good idea to go behind the vehicle to make sure a child, pet, or toy is not in the way. Back slowly from a driveway into a street. Turn your head so you can look through the rear window. Do not depend on your mirrors.
- Trucks, tractor-trailers, buses, and recreational vehicles (RVs) – including motor homes, campers, and travel trailers – are longer, higher, and wider than other vehicles. They accelerate slowly and require greater stopping and turning distances. Plus, there are danger areas around these vehicles where crashes are more likely to occur. These areas are called no-zones. No-zones on the side, front, and rear also include blind spots where your car disappears from the driver’s view. Learning the no-zones can save your life!
- When you reach the end of a freeway on-ramp, weather and ramp conditions permitting, you should be traveling as close as possible to the speed of traffic.
- Sometimes you can take hazards one at a time. Suppose there is only one oncoming car to your left and a bicyclist to your right. Instead of driving between the car and the bike, take them one at a time. Slow down and let the car pass. Then move to the left to give yourself plenty of room to pass the bicyclist.
- An interchange is the connection of a freeway to a road or another freeway by a series of ramps.
- A solid white line indicates the right edge of the traffic lane on a road. A solid or broken yellow line indicates the left edge of traffic lanes going in your direction on a divided highway.
- To be a defensive driver, you must know what is happening around your vehicle. You must look ahead, to the sides, and behind the vehicle. Scanning helps you to see problems ahead, and you can easily respond to oncoming hazards when driving.
- Locked wheel skids are usually caused by braking too hard at a high speed and locking the wheels. The vehicle will skid no matter which way the steering wheel is turned. Take your foot off the brake to unlock the wheels. Then straighten the front wheels as the vehicle begins to straighten out. Slow the vehicle gradually until you are at a safe speed to continue driving.
- When a broken yellow line is on your side of the center dash stripe, you may cross the line for passing if it is safe to do so.
- Expressway driving may cause highway hypnosis, a condition of drowsiness or unawareness induced by monotony, the sound of the wind, the tires on the pavement, and the steady hum of the engine.
- On approaching the modern roundabout, yield to vehicles and bicyclists within the circulating roadway. Look to your left to see if there is an appropriate gap in traffic. If one is not available, you may need to stop. Always enter the roundabout to the right and proceed on the right side of the central island.
- You can prevent skids by driving slowly and carefully, especially on curves. If you find yourself in a skid, remain calm, ease your foot off the gas, and carefully steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go. For cars without anti-lock brakes, avoid using your brakes. This procedure, known as “steering into the skid,” will bring the back end of your car in line with the front
- A single solid white line across a road at an intersection means that a motorist must stop behind the line for a traffic signal or sign.
- Diagonal yellow striping marks on streets and highways indicate a narrow road or an obstruction ahead.
- If there are three or more lanes going in one direction, the middle lane, or lanes, are usually the smoothest.
- Hydroplaning may occur during rainstorms. In heavy rain, your tires can ride on a film of water, and at 50 mph, your tires can lose all contact with the road. Provide a larger space cushion around you and go slowly.
