1.「grateful」：常见的意思是“感激的，感谢的”，此处指的是“令人获得快意的；受欢迎的”。
原句：The shade was grateful, and the tree was so easy to climb that with my teacher’s assistance I was able to scramble to a seat in the branches.
e.g. The light breeze is so grateful that I suddenly pull myself together.
2.「fork」：常见的意思是“餐叉，叉子”，由这个常见意思可以想到文章里的“（树的）分杈处”的意思；再引申一下，还有“（河流的）岔口，岔路”的意思。
原句：I crouched down in the fork of the tree.
e.g. She climbed up to the treetop and sat on one of the fork.
3.「mere」：常见的意思是“仅仅，只不过”，这里是指something which is small or not extreme has a big effect or is important用于表示某物虽小或微不足道，却有很大的影响或重要性。
原句：The mere thought filled me with terror.
e.g. His mere presence made her feel afraid.
