First Snow

On Sunday morning, I went downstairs. I settled down on my comfy sofa and curled into a ball as usual. I started to read a book called “Squirrel Flight’s Hope.” Then my brother came down. He shouted, “Mia, look at outside”. I quickly opened the curtains.  It was SNOWING! YIPEEE!!

Without hesitation, I went upstairs and asked my mom if I could play in the snow.

She said, “no.”

I was angry that I couldn’t play in the snow, so I asked my mom why I couldn’t go outside.

She said, “I don’t want to get out of my toasty blanket on a Sunday morning to look for your snow boots and help you put on your snow pants!”

Then I asked her, “why don’t you like snow?”

She said, “I do not like it because I have to shovel the driveway, and it is too dangerous to drive on a snowy day.”

I felt very frustrated because I wanted to build a snowman, a snow castle, a snow restaurant, and anything else I could build out of snow. I also wanted to touch the snow and let it melt in my palm. So, I asked my mom if she knew where my snow pants were, and she said, “I don’t know!”. UGGH! My mom never wants to get out of bed!

I decided to look for my snow pants myself. “I knew it was usually in the closet near the garage door. If I could find my snow pants, I would go outside to play with my brother no matter what. I do not want to miss the first snow!”

So, I went downstairs AGAIN and looked around and finally found my snow pants and snow boots in the closet, as I guessed.

Then my brother Ray and I went outside.

I even can smell the snow. It is fresh like peppermint candy.

“Oh well,” I thought. “Since I am outside, I need to pile the snow to build a snowman anyway; I may as well shovel the driveway.” So, Ray and I grabbed our shovels and started mission impossible. We piled all the snow into the corner of the driveway; then, we began to play in it. We made a snowman and many snowballs (which turned into a snowball fight).

After shoveling and playing in the snow, I was exhausted. Now I understand why grown-ups hate snow because of all the work they have to do. I guess we just looked at the same thing from different perspectives.

My mom just went downstairs to check on us, and we couldn’t wait to tell her the exciting news that we had cleared the driveway, and she was very, very, very happy. She said, “you have built a big and friendly snowman, and now I could tell how much fun you had. Maybe I shouldn’t stop you from playing outside in the first place. I guess all the grown-ups have already forgotten all the joy the snow brought to them.”
