English has quite a few words which are made by joining two different words together like ‘hangry’, for example: brunch, motel, Brexit. What do we call these words? Are they…
a) Suitcase words
b) Portmanteau words, or
c) Backpack words
suitcase words—words that contain a variety of meanings packed into them, such as conscience, emotions, consciousness, experience, thinking, morality, right, and wrong.
- grumpy 麦克米伦的解释是:unhappy and dissatisfied, often for no obvious reason
- kind of oxford 的解释是 slightly ;in some ways 即稍微 有点儿
它的近义词是 sort of - smarty pants 根据urban词典 意为someone who displays intelligence in an annoying way
- kick in 麦克米伦的释义 : INFORMAL to start to have an effect
hangry
angry because of hungerirritability 易怒 动词(v) irritate 使烦恼
getting annoyed very easilymerge
join different things togetherfight or flight hormones
chemicals in the body that prepare us for aggression or escaperage
a state of being very angry
(补充一个短语: be all the rage 十分流行;风靡一时)impulsive 容易冲动的
without control; without thinking about the consequences of an action
And she says that it was the wonderful world of social media that joined the two words together.
Hormones are the chemicals we make in our bodies that control certain biological and psychological functions.
Hangry: are you angry when you're hungry?
