classical music isn't dead

gravestone: a stone above a grave showing details of the person buried there 墓碑

hoary: [usually before noun,一般用于名词前]a hoary joke, remark etc is so well-known that people no longer find it amusing or interesting 陈腐的,老掉牙的 eg: The hoary slogan 'Not sold in stores' has become the exception to the rule.

obituary: an article in a newspaper about the life of someone who has just died〔报纸上的〕讣告,讣闻,讣文  e.g. For example, Bloomberg published an premature obituary of Steve Jobs back in 2008.

slate: ROCK岩石[U]a dark grey rock that can easily be split into flat thin pieces板岩,板石; ON A ROOF房顶上[C]a small piece of slate or similar material that is used for covering roofs【尤英】 石板瓦 e.g. The 12 headless skeletons were found 70 years ago, along with a slate buried in the sand.

spasm: spasm of grief/laughter/coughing etc a sudden strong feeling or reaction that you have for a short period of time一阵悲伤/欢笑/咳嗽等 e.g. So is the Ocalan affair the only reason for the latest spasm of arrests?

morbidity: N the state of being morbid 病态 e.g. Obesity is a major cause of morbidity and mortality and is associated with high medical expenditures.

timeline: N-COUNTtimeline is a visual representation of a sequence of events, especially historical events. (尤指历史事件) 年表

kick the bucket: [俚语]死,翘辫子 e.g. Indeed, it's become a popular guessing game among readers as to which member will kick the bucket.

doom-mongering: monger/ˈmʌŋɡə/ N a trader or dealer 商人; 贩子 

autopsy:  post morteman examination of a dead body to discover the cause of death【尤美】,【英】 尸体剖检,验尸 e.g. Police said he died of excessive alcohol-consumption, and his body was cremated without autopsy.

comatose: ADJ A person who is comatose is in a deep sleep, usually because they are tired or have drunk too much alcohol. 昏睡的; ADJ A person who is comatose is in a coma. 昏迷不醒的 e.g. She added her father was not bedridden or comatose and could hold a conversation and swallow.

barb: N-COUNTA barb is an unkind remark meant as a criticism of someone or something. 讽刺; 伤人的话或事 e.g. The barb stung her exactly the way he hoped it would.

intendant: N a provincial or colonial official of France, Spain, or Portugal (法国、西班牙、葡萄牙封建王朝的)省长或殖民地行政长官 

jeremiad: a long speech or piece of writing that complains about a situation, or says that bad things will happen【正式】 伤心的叙述;哀诉的文章;悲观的预言 e.g. Ryanair's combative boss, Michael O'Leary, seems almost to welcome Mr Bisignani's Jeremiad.

aberration: an action or event that is very different from what usually happens or what someone usually does【正式】 一反常态;异常 e.g. It should be read by anyone who thinks that last year's Seattle demonstrations were an aberration.

blaze: N-COUNT Blaze is also a noun. 灿烂 e.g. I've seen the world and it sights in my day, cities that blaze like the sun.

palpable: a feeling that is palpable is so strong that other people notice it and can feel it around them明显的,显而易见的; [only before noun,仅用于名词前]complete 完全的,彻底的 e.g. The neighbourhoods on this side are decidedly scruffier, with the poverty far more palpable and unsettling.

apathetic: not interested in something, and not willing to make any effort to change or improve things无兴趣的;冷淡的;无动于衷的 e.g. Conversely, during market crashes (and huge losses), the traders became apathetic and excessively risk-averse.

patronage: the support, especially financial support, that is given to an organization or activity by a patron 赞助,资助 e.g. Many believe that their involvement with the life of the theatre was more than that of passive patronage.

pretentious: if someone or something is pretentious, they try to seem more important, intelligent, or high class than they really are in order to be impressive 自以为是的,自我炫耀的,矫饰的 e.g. But, reader, you will need time, a stomach for the pretentious, and a very hearty appetite.

cursory: done very quickly without much attention to details 粗略的,草率的,仓促的 e.g. Even a cursory glance at Icahn's record shows he will respond to that incentive.

hover: [always + adv/prep]if a level, price etc hovers around a certain amount, it stays close to that amount, only changing slightly up or down〔水平、价格等在某数量上下〕摇摆不定  e.g. The dollar has been hovering around the 110 yen level.

marginalize: to make a person or a group of people unimportant and powerless in an unfair way使〔某人或某群体〕显得不重要,使边缘化 e.g. Female employees complained of being marginalized by management.

declinists: (美国)衰落论者

symphonies:N-COUNT/N-IN-NAMES A symphony is a piece of music written to be played by an orchestra. Symphonies are usually made up of four separate sections called movements. 交响乐

uncanny:ADJ If you describe something as uncanny, you mean that it is strange and difficult to explain. 出奇的 e.g. The hero, Danny, bears an uncanny resemblance to Kirk Douglas.

excerpt: N-COUNT An excerpt is a short piece of writing or music taken from a larger piece. 摘录; 节选 e.g. Below are excerpts from our conversations about how their brands are making it work.

throes: N-PLURAL If someone is experiencing something bad or emotionally painful, you can say that they are in the throes of it, especially when it is in its final stages. (尤指最后阶段的)困境; 痛苦; PREP-PHRASE If you are in the throes of doing or experiencing something, especially something difficult, you are busy doing it or are deeply involved in it. 正忙于…; 处于…困境之中 e.g. In the throes of its own identity crisis, Turkey now sits staring largely at itself.
