The table compares five countries in terms of consumer spending on three items in 2002.
As for food/drinks/tobacco, the highest proportion of spending was in Turkey, where 32.14% of total spending was spent on this category, compared with a marginally lower figure for Ireland, at 28.91%. The proportion in Italy, Spain and Sweden was much smaller, below 20% respectively.
With respect to clothing/footwear, it is apparent that the figure for Italy ranked the first, accounting for 9.00% of total,while the figure for Sweden was the lowest, at only 5.40%. The situations were similar in Ireland, Spain and Italy because consumers in each country spent about 6.50% of total to purchase clothing or footwear.
In regard to leisure/education, the figure for Turkey topped the list again, making up 4.35%, whereas the figures for Spain and Ireland were much lower. Consumers in Sweden and Italy allocated a similar share of their total expenditure on this category, spending around 3.20% of total respectively.
Overall, while the category of food/drinks/tobacco cost the largest share of spending, the expenditure on Leisure and education was the lowest in each country.
