Tuesday with you two
I chose several Tuesdays to “finish” this life-long lesson. According to the title of the book, I regard my reading as a ceremony full of respect.
This book tells that after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Morrie's final days are spent giving his former student Mitch his final lesson of life. The novel is divided into 14 different "days" that Mitch Albom spent with his professor Morrie. Throughout these days, Mitch and Morrie discuss various topic important to life and living.
What is the most important factor that impel me to read this book? Why is it so unique? I concluded that it is the person who share his experience. Never before had I encounter such a kind old man with wise ideas. And most important, his is so close the end of his life. There are so many speeches given by successful adults, but seldom do they experience everything in life.
Following will be the topics occurred in the lesson that I am interested in.
First comes death. It is difficult for us to understand death for there are no one who experienced it. But we don’t have to worry about or be afraid of it. As Shi Tiesheng said,“ Death is something not to be rushed, something that must happen.” Morrie advised people to live everyday as the last day, do the things that you will never regret. Meaningless things like argument and hate do not deserve our spending time. It is easier said than done, we are sometimes carried away by anger, and do things unreasonably.
Another topic I focus on is fear of aging. I always see such sentences,” Wish you being 18 everyday!” It is really confusing why some people don’t really accept their aging. What is the problem? Morrie gave us one kind of reason. He thought the young are not wise. They have very little understanding about life. They live without knowing their value. It sounds interesting. According to this point of view, do I have a little bit of understanding about life than some peers? A little happiness. I sometimes write diaries, recording my development of thoughts. Looking through the diary, I am content with a light smile.
“These were people so hungry for love that they were accepting substitutes. They were embracing material things and expecting a sort of hug back. But it never works. You can't substitute material things for love or for gentleness or for tenderness or for a sense of comradeship.” I am also interested in this part, but all my experiences are money consumption. The only extra income is scholarship. Maybe one day, when I have a job, I can understand more.
After taking this lesson, I have a brand-new perspective of life. Although I finish the theoretical part of it, what matters is my practice. I want to live up to parents’ expectation in order to meet their satisfaction of my living a joyful life. I want to keep a diary memorizing all the things that influence me. I want to realize the meaning of my life.
What a wonderful lesson! Thanks, Morrie!
