App

What If I Tipped You... Dinner?

Every time the delivery guy hands me my order,
I subconsciously glance at the paper bag—
Does it look like it's been opened?

I’ve read a few rumors about riders sneaking bites from customers’ meals.
I’ve read far more stories of riders working tirelessly,
barely having time to breathe,
let alone tamper with someone’s pad thai.

Ever since I switched to app-based automatic payment,
I’ve felt a little guilty not tipping the delivery guys directly.
When I used to pay in cash, I could at least tell them,
“Keep the change.”
It wasn’t a formal tip, just a way to skip the fuss.
But I imagine it made them smile.
A little adds up.

Now, with the app, they get exactly what they’re owed.
Not a cent more.

Eventually, I found out the app actually has a “tip your rider” button.
Aha. That explains it.

No wonder some riders hop off their bikes,
hand me my bag like it’s a ceremonial offering,
and bow with the kind of politeness
I haven’t seen from my own son in years.

Could it be... they're hoping for a tip through the app?
Or—wait—could it be... they’re secretly hoping I’ll order them dinner too?
