It was a gentle, rainy afternoon. Tiny raindrops danced on the playground, and Ruby smiled brightly as she swung back and forth, her little feet kicking happily in the air.
那是一个温柔的雨天午后，细细的雨滴从空中飘落到操场。Ruby 坐在秋千上笑得灿烂，轻轻荡着，脚尖在空气里愉快地踢着。
Suddenly—whoops! Ruby slipped from the wet swing and fell softly into the muddy ground with a quiet plop. Her clothes were covered in mud, and her hands were messy. She sat still for a moment, feeling a small flutter of fear in her chest.
突然——哎呀！因为秋千太滑，Ruby 从上面滑落下来，轻轻地跌进了柔软的泥地里，发出一声轻轻的“噗通”。她的衣服沾满了泥，双手也是脏兮兮的。她愣了一下，胸口涌起一丝小小的惊慌。
Ruby’s friend walked toward her. Ruby hoped she would hear a gentle, “Are you okay?” But instead, her friend gasped and said, “Oh no, Ruby! You’re so muddy!”
Ruby 的朋友走了过来。Ruby 心里希望听见一句温柔的“你还好吗？”可是朋友却惊呼：“天哪，Ruby！你怎么这么脏！”
Ruby looked down at her muddy clothes. Her heart felt small and heavy. She whispered to herself, “I wish she cared aboutme… not the mud.”
Ruby 低头看着自己满是泥点的衣服，心一下子沉沉的，变得小小的。她轻轻对自己说：“我希望她关心的是我……而不是这些泥。”
Ruby took a tiny, brave breath. She stood up and said softly, “I feel sad. I wanted you to ask if I’m okay.”
Ruby 深吸了一口细小却勇敢的气息，站起来，轻轻地说：“我觉得难过。我希望你问我有没有事。”
Her friend’s eyes widened. She hadn’t known Ruby needed that. She stepped closer and said gently, “I’m sorry, Ruby. Are you okay?” Ruby nodded, and warmth bloomed in her heart.
朋友睁大了眼睛，她不知道 Ruby 需要的是这一句。她向前靠近了一步，温柔地说：“对不起，Ruby。你还好吗？” Ruby 点了点头，心里立刻像开出了一朵温暖的小花。
Ruby was still a little muddy, but her friend held her hand as they walked back across the playground. The rain tapped softly on the ground as the two girls giggled together.
Ruby 身上仍然带着些泥点，但朋友牵住了她的手，两人一起走回操场。雨滴轻轻拍打着地面，她们在雨声中悄悄地咯咯笑着。
And that night, as Ruby drifted toward sleep, she remembered something precious:
