The control engineer works with the operators to explain how to interpret the information on the operator displays and how to use the displays to interact with the DMCplus controller.
Once these steps are accomplished, the actual commissioning takes place. All manipulated variable limits are pinched in very near the current setpoint values so that only very small control moves are allowed.
The DMCplus controller is then turned on. Once the controller runs, calculates moves, and implements these moves on the process, the control engineer must make sure that the calculated moves are actually implemented at the regulatory control level.
At this point, the manipulated variable limits are gradually relaxed, controller performance is evaluated, and re-tuning is done as required. During the controller commissioning phase, control engineers again work around the clock in the control room with the operators.
Step 9: Hold formal operator training
Once the DMCplus controller has been successfully commissioned,formal operator training takes place. This is deferred until after the completion of commissioning because it is not unusual to modify the controller design even during commissioning.
The most common reason for this is that the DMCplus controller,when optimizing the process, may cause a constraint to become active that was never observed to be a problem previously. The data for this constraint from the plant test is then used to build a model of this variable, and the variable is added to the controller.
Delaying formal operator training until after commissioning allows the training to be done in the context of the final controller.

Step 10: Maintain the DMCplus controller
For any DMCplus application, some amount of maintenance is required to ensure maximum performance. The most frequently performed maintenance task is monitoring the operating limits on the manipulated and controlled variables in the controllers to confirm that they reflect the widest operating range allowed. Left unattended, these limits often get pinched closer and closer, thus limiting the controller's ability to optimize the process.Refer to the DMCplus View documentation for details.
The other major task involved in maintaining the controller is to keep the steady-state variable costs updated when new product values or feed and utility costs become available. If the cost calculations are captured using a spreadsheet, it is a simple matter to run the calculation when new economic information becomes available and then enter the resulting steady-state variable cost values into the process control database.
The task of maintaining the DMCplus controller is greatly facilitated by the use of Aspen Technology's new Aspen Watch software.
