“新型冠状病毒”叫做novel coronavirus。
可能有人看见“novel”这个词打头就懵了：novel？novel不是“小说”的意思吗，怎么在这里看起来表达的是“新的”这个意思？
“novel”作为名词，确实是“小说”的意思。但是它还有另外一个词性，即形容词，而且作为形容词使用时，是有特指意义的，即“前所未见的，新的”。
也就是说，当要说明某种食物是以前没有见过的，是前所未见的新的，那么就可以用“novel”这个词。同时，这个词在科技科研领域相对见的比较多。
由于此次的冠状病毒是一种以前没有见过的、前所未见的新的冠状病毒，所以科技界给它命名时，就用了“novel”这个词。
当然，如果要用“new”也是可以的，只不过“new”含义更广泛一些，不特指“前所未见的”这一意义。例如下图：
