<the big cucumber> by Dr.Julie M. Wood. Illustrations by Sebastien Braun. This is one of the series of<I can read phonics >, The series are very interesting for 1-7 year-old kids to read. Because the characters are cute, the language is simple and useful. the reading starters could be attracted by the book easily. I chose this book to read with my 3-year-old son, Simon. By the way, after I take part in the training of picture books reading, Simon and I have formed a habit of reading an English picture book every day. That’s amazing!
Step one. warm up.
we sing a song together. Simon loves to sing Old McDonald had a farm. He sang again and again, until I said stop.
Step two. Look at the pictures.
Before reading the story, I would like to introduce author to Simon, then I would talk about the title and pictures on the cover.
For example. I asked who is she? ( point at Pen Hen, encouraged him to answer she is a hen.) then told him what the name of the hen is. This is Pen Hen, and said hi to Pen Hen. Pretended Pen Hen would reply me .
Me: Hello, pen hen.
Pen Hen: Hi, Nicky.
Simon said hi to Pen Hen as well.
Pen Hen: hello, Simon.
This made Simon giggling.
After reading the front cover, I asked Simon some questions about the pictures on each page. Just the simple questions, so that he could built up his confidence to reply me in English.
Step 3 Reading time
I pointed to the words as I read. Simon would like to read after me.Re-read the story with him. Encourage him to read on his own. Taught him the letter ‘H’ makes a hhh sound, as in hen, hole.
Step 4. More Learning.
I took out a plant pot with some soil in it, and a chilli. Then I invited Simon to the balcony. We were going to plant chilli seeds. He was very interested in planting. He digged a hole, planted a seed, watered the seed. Did everything as Pen Hen did. He is a helping hand! Finally, he cried, because he scratched his face with his hand, the chilli made his face hot. I laughed so hard when I said sorry to him. Poor Simon!
