1. Arrest

Verb.

- to seize (a person)by legal authority or warrant; take into custody.逮捕,拘留.

e.g. The police arrested the burglar.

- to stop a process or a development 阻止,中止.

e.g. They failed to arrest the company 's decline.

- to make sb notice sth and pay attention to it.吸引

noun.

- the act of arresting sb 逮捕

- an act of sth stopping or being interrupted.中止

e.g. Someone goes into cardiac arrest.心脏停搏

2. Resuscitation

Verb : resuscitate

= revive ; to revive, especially from apparent death or from unconsciousness.

e.g. He had a heart attack and all attempts to resuscitate him failed.

3. grubby

verb:

- dirty; slovenly:肮脏的,邋遢的

e.g. children with grubby faces and sad eyes.

- unpleasant because it involves activities that are dishonest or immoral.卑鄙的,可鄙的

e.g. a grubby scandal.丑闻

4. eliminate

verb:

- to remove or get rid of,排除,清除

e.g. the police have eliminated two suspects from their investigation.

- to defeat a person or a team淘汰

= knock out

- to kill sb, especially an enemy or oppnent消灭,干掉

5, comprise

verb

- to have sb/sth as parts or members.包含,包括

= consist of 

e.g. the collection comprises 327 paintings.

- to be the parts or members that form sth.组成。构成,是组成部分

= make sth up

e.g. Seminars and lectures comprised the day's activities.

6. insure

verb:

= ensure

- to guarantee against loss or harm.投保,保险

e.g. the painting is insured for 1 million.

- to sell insurance to sb for sth. 承保,接受投保

e.g the company can refuse to insure a property that does not have window locks.

insurer: 保险公司

7. insurgent

noun:

a person fighting against the government or armed forces of their own country起义者,叛乱者= rebel

adj:

= rebellious

e.g. The insurgent waves battered the shore.

insurgents: noun,起义,暴动

8. reimbursement

noun

reimburse:verb

- to make repayment to for expense or loss incurred:偿还,补偿

e.g. The insurance company reimbursed him for his losses in the fire.

9. venture

noun:

- a business enterprise or speculation in which something is risked in the hope of profit; a commercial or other speculation:(有风险的)企业,商业,投机活动

= undertaking

e.g. Their newest venture allows you to order their products online.

verb

- to make or embark upon a venture; dare to enter or go:敢于去(危险或令人不快的地方)

e.g. they ventured nervously into the water

- to take a risk; dare; presume:冒险

= gamble

e.g. it was wrong to venture his financial security on such a risky deal.

nothing ventured, nothing gained.不入虎穴焉得虎子

10. backdrop

noun:

- the background of an event; setting.背景

e.g. it was against this backdrop of racial tension that the civil war began.

- a painted piece of cloth that is hung behind the stage in a theater as part of the scenery.(舞台的)背景幕布

11. intrigue

verb:

- to arouse the curiosity or interest of by unusual, new, or otherwise fascinating or compelling qualities;激起兴趣,引发好奇心

e.g. The plan intrigues me, but I wonder if it will work.

- to secretly plan with other people to harm sb.密谋害某人

noun:

- a secret plan or relationship密谋,秘密关系

- the activity of making secret plans in order to achieve an aim.阴谋,密谋策划

e.g. political intrigue.

12. concussion

noun:

- shock caused by the impact of a collision, blow, etc.震荡

e.g. he was taken to hospital with a concussion.

13. contraceptive

adj:

- tending or serving to prevent conception or impregnation.避孕的

noun:

- a contraceptive device, drug, foam, etc.避孕药

e.g. oral contraceptives 口服避孕药

contraception: noun,避孕,节育

contraception:verb 避孕

14. onerous

adj:

- needing great effort; causing trouble or worry.费力的,艰巨的

= taxing

e.g. an onerous duty

15. upheaval

noun:

- strong or violent change or disturbance, as in a society:巨变,动荡

= disruption

e.g. i can't face the upheaval of moving house again.

16. stalk

noun:

- the stem or main axis of a plant.叶柄,花梗,茎秆

e.g. flowers on long stalks

verb:

- to move slowly and quietly towards an animal or a person, in order to kill, catch or harm it or them. 偷偷接近

e.g. the lion is stalking a zebra.

- to illegally follow and watch sb over a long period of time.(非法)跟踪,盯梢

e.g she claimed that he had been stalking her over a period of three years.

17. sedentary

adj:

- in which you spend a lot of time sitting down.需要久坐的

e.g. a sedentary lifestyle

- spending a lot of time sitting down and not moving 惯于久坐不动的

e.g. he became increasingly sedentary in later life.

- that stay and live in the same place or area.定居的,不迁徙的

e.g. a sedentary population定居人口

18. exacerbate

verb:

- to make sth worse, especially a disease or problem 使恶化,使加剧

= aggravate

e.g. the symptom may be exacerbated by certain drugs.

19. cavalier

adj:

- haughty, disdainful, or supercilious:傲慢的,漫不经心的

e.g. the government takes a cavalier attitude to the problems of prison overcrowding.

20. consent

noun:

- permission, approval, or agreement; compliance; acquiescence:同意,准许

e.g. He gave his consent to the marriage.

- agreement in sentiment, opinion, a course of action, etc.:同意,赞同

e.g. By common consent he was appointed official delegate.

- an official document giving permission for sth. 正式批准文件

21. clash

noun:

- a fight between two groups of people.打架,冲突

e.g. clash broke out between police and demonstrators.

- an argument 争论,辩论

= conflict

- the difference 差异,分歧

e.g. a clash of intersts

verb:

- to make a loud, harsh noise:发出大声

e.g. The gears of the old car clashed and grated.

- to conflict; disagree:

e.g. Their stories of the accident clashed completely.

- to come together or collide, especially noisily:

- (of juxtaposed colors) to be offensive to the eye.颜色冲突

e.g. the wallpaper clashes with the carpet.
