Can the Use of AI Chatbots Be Compulsive?
A new study based on teenagers’ online posts explores compulsive use of AI chatbots among 13‑17‑year‑olds. Some teens rely on chatbots for emotional comfort and companionship, and researchers identified six typical signs of behavioral addiction in their experiences, such as tolerance, withdrawal and relapse. AI tends to agree with and affirm users, which makes it a tempting emotional outlet but fails to offer objective, constructive feedback. Over‑reliance on chatbots may deprive young people of chances to build real communication and critical thinking skills. Though AI can assist addiction treatment under proper supervision, its tendency to cater to users’ preferences creates notable risks for adolescents.
