春花秋月何时了？
往事知多少。
小楼昨夜又东风，
故国不堪回首月明中。
When will end spring flowers and autumn moon?
I wonder why my happy times vanished so soon.
My small tower stood in the east wind last night,
Unbearable to recall my lost land in the moonlight!
雕栏玉砌应犹在，
只是朱颜改。
问君能有几多愁？
恰似一江春水向东流。
Carved balusters and marble steps still stay,
But those rosy faces have withered away.
If you ask me how much grief grows,
Just like a spring river eastward flows!

春花秋月历来为才子佳人所吟咏，但词人却怕见这美好景象，原因何在？——是怕勾起往日在故国赏花吟月的快乐时光。“雕栏玉砌应犹在，只是朱颜改。”他遥望南国慨叹，“雕栏”“玉砌”也许还在吧；只是当年曾在栏边砌下留恋欢乐的有情之人，已不复当年的神韵风采了。“只是”二字的叹惋口气，传出物是人非的无限怅恨之感。这愁有多深，有多长呢？看那一江东流不尽的春水就有答案了。
