(Million PoundNote)

The voyage was long and stormy.
• Stare: 盯着看。I was very hungry and I stared at their breakfast.
• Make a bet: 打赌。I want to tell the reader that the two gentlemen had made a bet several days before.
• Banknote: 钞票。The Bank of England issued two banknotes of a million pounds each for a public transaction with a foreign country.
If an honest and intelligent stranger arrives in London without afriend and without money, except for the £1,000,000 banknote,he will starve to death.
• Faint: 晕倒。I looked at the banknote and almost fainted
• Fog: 雾;困惑。I was confused. My head was in a fog.
They will put me in an asylum.
• Celebrity: 名人。Now you're a millionaire, a celebrity here in London.
• Marvelous: 美妙的。Let me just stand here and look at this marvelous hotel.
• Amazed: 吃惊的。I was amazed. What was happening?
(The Callof the Wild)

That evening the man took Buck to the backroom of a saloon in San Francisco.
• Crate: 大货箱。The men took off the rope and threw him into a crate.
He growled and barked at the men.
The man brought a hatchet and a club.
The pain was terrible. It was agony.
There was danger everywhere because these dogs and men were not city dogs and men. They only knew the law of club and fang.
• Harness: 马具。Francois put a harness on him.
• Sled: 雪橇。He must pull the sled to the forest to get firewood.
Buck was learning to live in the hostile Northland.
• Furious: 狂怒的。Hal was furious and took the club. He hit Buck again and again. But Buck did not want to stand up.
• Adore: 爱慕。He adored Thornton. When Thornton touched him or spoke to him, he was wild with happiness.
Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would have known that trouble was brewing, not alone for himself, but for every tide-water dog, strong of muscle and with warm, long hair, from Puget Sound to San Diego. Because men, groping in the Arctic darkness, had found a yellow metal, and because steamship and transportation companies were booming the find, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted dogs, and the dogs they wanted were heavy dogs, with strong muscles by which to toil, and furry coats to protect them from the frost.
Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that there was trouble for every big, strong dog in California. Men found a yellow metal called gold in the Klondike. They needed big, strong dogs with furry coats to work in the north.
