The Story of Philosophy《哲学的故事》第1章Plato第7节VI. The Psychological Solution第5段第4句:

Music is valuable not only because it brings refinement of feeling and character, but also because it preserves and restores health. There are some diseases which can be treated only through the mind (Charades,157): so the Corybantic priest treated hysterical women with wild pipe music, which excited them to dance and dance till they fell to the ground exhausted, and went to sleep; when they awoke they were cured. The unconscious sources of human thought are touched and soothed by such methods; and it is in these substrata of behavior and feeling that genius sinks its roots. "No man when conscious attains to true or inspired intuition, but rather when the power of intellect is fettered in sleep or by disease or dementia"; the prophet (manlike) or genius is akin to the madman (manic) (Phadrus, 244).

1、"No man when conscious attains to true or inspired intuition, but rather when the power of intellect is fettered in sleep or by disease or dementia";
attain: to accomplish or achieve (something): to succeed in getting or doing (something)通常指经过努力获得,达到
Just as soon as you attain to one ambition you see another one glittering higher up still.
Attain VS attain to(来自《葛传椝英语惯用法词典》)
通用:power(权力),distinction(著名),knowledge(知识),wisdom(智慧)以及在表示年龄的词语(如old age,his twentieth year等)前
仅用attain:在end(目的),object(目的),ideal(理想),aspiration(愿望)前
fetter: to prevent (someone or something) from moving or acting freely束缚
The prince has a taste for the arts, and would improve if his mind were not fettered by cold rules and mere technical ideas.
dementia: a mental illness that causes someone to be unable to think clearly or to understand what is real and what is not real 痴呆
Loneliness increases the risk of heart disease, strokes and dementia.
2、the prophet (manlike) or genius is akin to the madman (manic) (Phadrus, 244).
akin: similar or related相似的,类似的
If manufacturing is akin to science, then services are more like the arts.
manic:having or relating to a mental illness that causes someone to become very excited or emotional发狂的,狂躁的
Without them, the suffer faces relapses of manic and depressive episodes.
