Our lives are fraught with disharmony and conflicts. We are fighting every day to survive such circumstances. It seems that no matter how hard we try, we are and will be caught forever in between opposites. This is how we are living our lives----living with an obligation of making choices between opposites.
As a response to this scenario, Othoniel's works reflect this confusion in a way that reverses this predicament. He utilizes glass that is inherently transparent and reflective. Through experimenting with these characters, he enables every piece of his work to reveal the world with a twist. As if unfurling a story, in which he couples reality with a sense of ethereal fiction. However, rendering reality fictitious is not his intention. On the contrary, he unfolds, implicitly, the reality of a world of unknown free from excruciating conflicts. His works recuperate an ultimate harmony created for humans.
The world is supposed to be in harmony.
This pursuit resonates with Chinese philosophy--- fêng Shui, advocating the ultimate harmony between humans and the environment. Those pearl-like glass beads dangling in the air, as though some invisible power making a silent prayer for reconciling opposites in time and space. Not only are they adorning the environment, which perhaps is the last message the artist intends to deliver, but they lead up to the artist's deepest yearning for the heavenly harmony of the secular world.
