英语中没有直接与“跨年”对应的表达，但是因为跨年活动通常是在元旦前夜，所以可以用“celebrate New Year’s Eve”来表达“跨年”的意思，不要再用“cross the year”了噢。

On 31st December, the festivities hit places around the world at slightly different times, due to the time differences across the world. Samoa, Tonga and Christmas Island, part of Kiribati, are the first places to welcome the New Year while American Samoa and Baker Island are among the last.

People gather around in public venues such as Times Square in New York City, or Trafalgar Square in London to count down for the closing seconds of the old year on 31st December.

Many New Year’s Eve celebrations are highlighted by firework displays. Last year, hundreds of thousands of Frenchmen are expected to line the Champs Elysees for fireworks. Meanwhile in Moscow, major boulevards and squares will be decked out to welcome the new year, with fireworks to light up 36 key sites.
3.Walking an empty suitcase 提空箱子出行
在南美的一些国家，人们相信在跨年夜提着空箱子出行能让来年多姿多彩。

In some South American countries, you might see some people on New Year's Eve walking around with an empty suitcase because some believe that taking what is called a "suitcase walk" means they will have a year full of adventures ahead.
4.Dropping things 掉落东西
每年跨年夜，纽约时代广场会举行降球仪式，象征新的一年的开始。于是掉落东西也渐渐成为美国其他一些地方的庆祝活动，比如在印第安纳州的溫森斯，人们喜欢从高处丢西瓜庆祝新年。
In New York in the US, huge crowds of people head to Times Square to see the ball drop, which is when a glowing ball is lowered down a big flagpole, to signal the start of the new year. As a result, other cities in the US now have their own traditions of dropping things on New Year's Eve. For instance, in Vincennes, Indiana, people drop watermelons from high up!
5.Fukubukuro/ Lucky bag 新年福袋
在日本，许多人会在新年期间购买新年福袋，因为福袋通常包含超过原价值的商品。并且，福袋内的商品随机组合，一不小心就抽中超值惊喜。

During New Year’s, many stores sell items in so called “lucky bags,” called fukubukuro, at ridiculously discounted prices. They are limited in numbers, making it a popular custom for shopping aficionados.
