Summer holiday is coming! Since I have been studying how to read picture books with kids, wherever I go, I would take a picture book with me, if the kids said I am bored, I want to play with the smart phone, I would say come here, kids, let me tell you a story to kill time. Anyway, they were not particularly keen on it, but they would say Okay , better than doing nothing. My two daughters are old enough to read the chapter books, but their English is not so good. As a mother I am,I want all of my kids to study English harder, no matter how old are they. So I always tell them, you are good sisters, let’s read the picture books for your youngest brother, because that’s a good way for him to start to learn English. They agreed with the idea, and supported me a lot.
Yesterday we were visiting my brother’s family. There were six kids, the eldest girl took the pictures for me. I prepared an interesting story <who stole the cookies from the cookie jar >for the other younger kids.
Before reading the book, I introduced the author and the characters to them first. Then I read the book, slowly they found the sentences are rhythmic, they started to read with me.
About the story
There was a jar of cookies, one of the cookies was stolen on each page. Dog said it’s Kitty stole the cookies from the cookie jar. Kitty said it’s mouse stole the cookies from the cookie jar. Mouse said it’s bunny stole the cookie from the cookie jar. Bunny said it’s piggy stole the cookie from the cookie jar. At the end, Piggy said “ did you?”
After reading the book, It’s time for game. I took out a jar of cookies, of course those were fake cookies. That made the kids very surprised. I asked them to use their own names instead of Dog, Kitty, Mouse, Bunny, and Piggy.
“ who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?” I asked
“ Leo stole the cookies from the cookie jar.” Leo took a cookie, we said it together.
“ who me?” Leo said.
“Yes you.” we said it together.
“ couldn’t be.” Leo said.
“Then who?” we said it together.
“ Daniel stole the cookies from the cookie jar.” Leo said.
“Who me?” Daniel said.
It went a round among the kids. Even the youngest kid could said it nicely.
At the end, I took a cookie from the cookie jar, when they said Nicky stole a cookie from the cookie jar. I said, “ yes, I took a cookie from the cookie jar. Well, kids, Never tell lies to mummy . Let’s share the cookies together!” They realized the meaning of the story suddenly. Then they all told me that children should be honest, daddy and mummy will not scold an honest child!
