音乐常常具有很强的感染力,通过听音乐,听众们能感受到作者想表达的喜怒哀乐。听众们也可以在音乐中找到一种特殊的归属感,并在烦乱嘈杂的当下找到一丝温暖与宁静。
纵观历史,音乐一直被赋予预防、治疗等医学价值。公元前4000年至今,音乐家、治疗师、哲学家以及其他艺术家和学者都在论文中记录了音乐对身体、 心理和社会的影响(MacDonald et al., 2013)。尽管音乐减轻疾病和痛苦的力量已经被人们认识了几个世纪,但直到 20 世纪才真正开始对音乐功效的原因进行系统研究。
近代神经科学研究表明,音乐是一种能够影响大脑中复杂神经生物学过程的物质,并表明它可能在治疗中发挥重要作用。临床研究也提供了新的证据,表明音乐疗法可以作为治疗抑郁症、自闭症、精神分裂症和痴呆症,以及激动、焦虑、失眠和药物滥用等问题的替代疗法 (Lin et al., 2011)。

在音乐对健康的五种介入方式中,音乐的日常使用虽然不是一种突出的实践,但包括了人们每日频繁与音乐以被动或主动的方式互动。最近的研究表明,聆听音乐可以对人们的健康和幸福产生积极影响(DeNora, 2000;Sloboda & O'Neill, 2001)。
音乐治疗是一个 100 多年来一直在研究和发展其实践的专业(Edwards, 2016)。越来越多的音乐治疗在心理健康的运用与成果支持了现代心理健康服务专业的发展。对研究的回顾总结音乐疗法是“一种结构化的互动,患者能够使用它来成功参与、管理他们的一些症状并表达与他们的经历相关的感受” (Edwards, 2006)。
