What kinds of number do you need to remember?
I guess that the most important number thatpeople in China have to memories is their identification number. We get our identification card when we are teenagers. It has eighteen digits, which are in fact a code which represents your personal details.
The first five figures represent your province and city, and the middle numbers represent your date of birth. I don’t know what the last few numbers mean. I’ve heard that in the UK they don’t have ID numbers, so Chinese ID numbers might be difficult for British people to call to mind. Eighteen digits are a bit difficult to recall, but I have been using itfor a long time now, so now it just roll off my tongue.
Do you like to visit museums and art galleries?
I’m a big fan of visiting galleries. Infact, here in Beijing there is an art district called 798 where there is lots of art out on the street. It is mostly modern art, like sculptures and graffiti, but if you make an appointment to go to some of the private galleries there, you can see some of the beautifully painted portraits and landscapes byChinese artists. There are a lot of tourists there at the weekend, so it is better to go on a weekday.

Describe an old person that you know and respect
You should say:
Who the old person is
How you know him/her
What him/she do
And why you respect him/her
An old person that I know and respect is Wen jiabao, who is the ex-prime minister of China. I don’t know him personally, but he is widely known as Grandpa Wen throughout the country because of his kindly face and compassionate nature. His name translated into English sounds like Wen Family Protects, so even his name gives me a good feeling.
What really makes me respect When Jiabao is the fact that during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, he was the first one on the scene arriving in a helicopter, risking his life to tell the nation that we hadto work together to support our friends in Sichuan.
I know that this is his job, but I cannotimagine that Putin or Trump would ever leave their office like that. I knowthat Wen Jia Bao actually had quite a low salary when he was prime minister, but he was always welcomed into people’s houses wherever he went.
Tell me about a person who is beautiful
Tell me about an old person
Tell me about a child
Tell me about a person you admire.
Describe a regular radio or television program that you often talk about with your friends or family.
You should say:
What the program is
What it’s about
What you like/dislike about it
And explain why you talk about it with your friends or family.
A radio program that my family and I frequently listen to is the traffic report on XX Traffic Radio. We usually listen to it during our morning commute as my mum drives me to school and then drives to work herself. The radio presenter talks about the traffic for the day, and mentions where there are traffic jams and road accidents, plus suggests alternative routes to make the traffic move more smoothly.
I wouldn't say that the show is particularly interesting. There is no music or stories, but I do accept that itis very useful as it gets Mum and me to work much faster than we would without it. The traffic in XX is a hot topic of conversation, and so listening to that show is not only useful in our everyday lives, but also gives us something to talk about.

Old people do not use mobile phones as much as young people.
Young people learn much faster than old people.
The government is responsible for everything.
Cars are the reason for most pollution in cities.
Girls are more creative, but boys have more energy.
Museums are only about history and are always boring.
Chinese food is the only kind of food.
What are the roles of mothers and fathers in your country?
In my country, fathers go out to work and make money, while mothers stay at home to look after the children and do the cooking.
So do you think if the wife made money, the father could stay at home and take care of the children?
No.
Why not?
……
What are the roles of mothers and fathers in your country?
Typically in my country, fathers will go out to work and make money, while mothers stay at home and look after the children, at least while the children are very young anyway.
Do you think this is the same for allfamily?
Oh, no way. Chinese culture is changing very quickly. In a lot of families there might be a single parent looking after the child because they got divorced or their partner died. I think that must put a lot of pressure on the child.
Tell me about the typical family in China.
The typical family in China is the mother, the father, and the child. Sometimes the grandparents live with the family too.
Is this the same for every family in China?
Oh yes, we have the one-child policy, so we have no brothers and sisters.
Tell me about the typical family in China.
Due to the one-child policy, which was started in the nineteen-eighties, the typical family unit in China consists oft he mother, the father, and the child. It may also include the paternal grandparents, but not usually the maternal grandparents.
Is this the same for every family in China?
Oh, not at all. These days as the divorce rate climbs in China, there are increasing numbers of divorces. This may mean that there are single mums and dads out there taking care of their children, but it also means that families could get even larger. For example, if people get married, their children get whole new families like step mothers and fathers, maybe step brothers and sisters. It completely changes the traditional idea of the family unit.
Who do you think uses cell phones more, young people or old people?
Of course it is young people. Young people use their cell phones every day, and they love to follow new technology. Old people do not need to use cell phones. They can just go out and talk with their friends and dance in the evening.
I think that if you were to ask most people this question, they would all say young people, but in fact, I don't completely agree. I think both young people and old people use mobile phones pretty much equally just in different ways. When you look at old people, they tend to use theirmobile phones more for its original purpose, by that I mean making phone calls. They are always calling their family members and chatting with their friends, also arranging what time to pick up their grandchildren from school. They may use first generation phones, or very basic ones, but they use them in a very social way.
Young people on the other hand, don’t really make many phone calls these days. Most of them have smart phones in cafes and even walking to school.
They are more connected than ever before, but it means they might ignore the people sitting right next to them. I really believe that social media doesn't really make people social anymore, maybe even the opposite. So you see, when it comes to mobile phones, I think both old people and young people use mobile phones in equal measure. It’s just they use them in deferent ways.
What kind of people enjoys living in cities?
I think that younger people, they will prefer to live in the cities, because the cities have more opportunities to find a job, and for older people they don’t prefer the city lifestyle because the city lifestyle is faster than the countryside and for younger people the city lifestyle will fit them, especially because they like new things, and most new things will show up in the city and not in the countryside. The old peopleprefer to live in the countryside and they can be more comfortable and have aslow life because in the cities there is more pollution than the countryside.
I think that the younger people on the whole enjoy living in cities. There are many more work opportunities and higher salaries up for grabs, and this means that they have a greater chance to go out and have fun, because let’s face it, most of the entertainment venues andevents take part in the city. In larger Chinese cities there are always concerts and sporting events, so if you are a music or sports fan, there’ll always be something for you to do.
I think that it is less obvious that older people also enjoy city life too. Young Chinese people all seem to have this idea that old people would enjoy going out to the countryside to relax after they retire, but as the old people in China get richer, they too want to enjoy their lives in the city, like the old people in Guangzhou who go out to eat DimSum with their friends and dance in the evening. I don’t think you could find that kind of lifestyle in the countryside.
Do you think the government should spend more money educating young or old people?
I think that the government should spend more money educating young people than old people. Young people learn much faster than old people, and young people are more important to society than old people. People who are over fifty do not need to learn anything anymore.
For the most part, education for young people is already paid by the government. Children and teenagers are allowed to go to school for free in most countries, and even when their parents have to pay, the fees are usually subsidized. Instead, I think that the government should allocate some funds for older people. The government is planning to increase the retirement age in China, which means that people will have to work longer. For this reason, they will need to update theirskills regularly. A smarter older workforce can benefit the economy as well associety.
