一 words and expressions
1. A style that consists of passive constructions will sap the reader’s energy.
sap:逐渐〕削弱(破坏)〔尤指力量或决心〕,与后面的dilute,whittle away同义
sap sb's strength / courage/ energy
2. What a vast amount of huffing and puffing these pivotal words save!
huff and puff:to breathe out in a noisy way, especially when you do something that involves a lot of physical effort气喘吁吁
3. The common reaction is incredulous laughter.
incredulous:unable or unwilling to believe something不能相信的; 不愿相信的:
incredulous look /expression / voice etc
4. This is false economy—they save a few hours and blow their whole personality.
economy: 这里与我们常见的意思不一样:the careful use of money, time, goods etc so that nothing is wasted节约; 节俭
5. Much of what you see and hear will come back, having percolated for days or months or even years through your subconscious mind, just when your conscious mind, laboring to write, needs it.
percolate:if an idea, feeling, or piece of information percolates through a group, it gradually spreads〔观念、感觉或信息〕逐渐传开
二 thoughts
今天读的这部分有点琐碎,但是这几点对我还真的非常有启发。下面我就几点内容谈谈我的感受。
1. 动词对于一篇文章真的非常关键,尤其对于记叙文的写作。我记得在上英文写作课narrative essay时老师就反复说 要用specific verbs,要active,不要形容任何东西都用很模糊的词。
例如
He lay motionless in the middle of the road as the bus __sped__ away.(go quickly)
I jumped in car and ___raced__ back to the hospital.(rush)
2. 还有对于形容词副词的时候要检查赘余和重复,这点在中式英语之鉴中也提到了。我认为对于我们这些非母语者,在学习新词时,认真看它的英文释义,搞清强调的点。
3. 对标点的讲述使我认识到了它的作用不小。
4. 之前提到unity的重要性,这里有提到paragraph的重要性
