He was born in England and the second youngest of six children.

He loved to surround himself with the beauties of nature probably because he came from a family of scientists. For example, his father was a medical doctor and his grandfather was a famous botanist.

He studied at University of Edinburgh in 1825 when he was 16 years old and was very inclined to learn natural history.

His mentor who was a botany professor at Christ’s College recommended him for a naturalist’s position after his graduation.

He joined the second voyage of the HMS Beagle （“小猎犬号”,又译做“贝格尔号”,英国海军考察船。） to South America and then collected various specimens including animals and plants around the world.

He had a chance to carefully observe principles of botany, zoology and geology by conducting hands-on experimentation.

He started to develop the renowned theory about the origin of living beings which was contrary to the popular religious view that all of nature was born of God at the time.

His theory made a clear statement that species evolved to successfully adapt or survive changes in the environment following the rule of nature, also known as“natural selection”.

He said:“a man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.”
