Weibo’s Insta-clone returns to app stores after plagiarism glitch
① Oasis, the Instagram-like app launched by Chinese microblogging site Weibo, is back on app stores with a slightly tweaked logo after it went missing in action for a few days in the wake of plagiarism allegations.
② Following questions over the striking similarity between the new app’s logo and a Korean film festival’s insignia, Weibo immediately pulled Oasis from app stores and apologized for taking “inspiration” from the latter’s design.
③ The beta version of Oasis was first released to much fanfare in early September. Armed with a similar spectrum of filters and effects to edit and post multimedia content, it was regarded as the Chinese alternative to Instagram, an image-sharing platform owned by Facebook.
④ On the discover tab, however, it’s positioned more as a duplicate of Xiaohongshu, an online lifestyle community combined with social e-commerce functionalities. Both allow users to browse tailored content ranging from fashion and food to travel categories.
⑤ For the last few quarters, Weibo’s bottom line has been on a decline, facing challenges from dominating rival WeChat and rising stars like Douyin. The social media giant is looking for a second wind in Oasis to move the needle and to keep the competition at bay.
