A student from Jilin University has shared that their college acceptance letter to the university included edible mushroom- based paper. The novelty even inspired the student to cook the paper into a chicken-and-mushroom stew, sparking widespread discussion online.
University officials later clarified that only an attached insert made from fungal mycelium was edible, not the main admission letter itself.
According to the university, this year's admission package features a vibrant red design. Enclosed within is a special slip of "mushroom paper", developed by a team at the university led by professor Li Yu.
The innovation paper is crafted from a unique fungal fiber, eliminating the need for chemical processes typically used in traditional papermaking, such as alkali washing and bleaching. As a result, the material is low-carbon, environmentally friendly, and health conscious.
