一、大众文化的影响
The impact of the world on all of us is much greater than we usually realize.
Today, the influence exerted by mass cultures( broadcast media, newspapers, magazines and popular music) is often greater than family.
Television programmers use frequent scene shifts(场景变换) and sensory appeals(感官吸引) such as car crashes, violence, and sexual encounters to keep audience interest from diminishing. Then they add frequent commercial interruptions.
Mass culture has made them impatient with the normal rhythms of life.
Our experiences can work a kind of self-hypnotism on us, suggesting a conclusion about ourselves and then urging us to make it come true.
Children are constantly recording impressions, and they lack any sophisticated process for sorting out those impressions and dealing with them.
二、独立人格指导
- Tree your first reaction to any person, issue, or situation as tentative(尝试). No matter how appealing it may be, refuse to embrace it until after you have examined it.
- Deceide why you reached as you did. Consider whether you borrowed the reaction from someone else - a parent or friend, perhaps, or a celebrity or fictional character on telebision. If possible, determine what specific experiences conditioned you to react this way.
- Think of other reactions you might have had to the person, issue, or situation.
- Ask yourself whether one of the other reactions is more appropriate than your first reaction. And when you answer, resist the influence of your conditioning.
