What I learned in today’s lecture are API’s history and future, GDPR’s global effect.

Open APIs (application programming interfaces) are constantly heard on the Internet. I think we need to learn these stuff, because no one can stay away from them. It is Internet millennium now. Every corporation is talking about how they can apply these in their organization and help their entity’s growth. So, I am more than happy to learn this lesson. I learned something that surprised me. I thought APIs are APPs, which are relatively new, but APIs have existed for a long time. It seems Windows,Google, Amazon, ICBC’s E-banking services are all APIs. They are the programs that negotiate with computers on behalf of human, so that the computers understand what humans are asking them to do. APIs have gone into my life longbefore I notice them. And they will play a more and more important role in the future.

Now, about GDPR, I have to say I wasn’t paying very much attention when prof. Sachdev talked about them at the beginning of our study prior to this lecture. I learned deeply from this lecture that the earth is a big village. With the help of Internet and modern transportation,any regulatory change will affect everyone on the planet. I was thinking, yes,Europe is putting on some new regulatory requirements to European banks, so we are lucky that we are not serving the European banking industry. We are serving Chinese community. It turned out that I was too naïve. With ICBC doing internationalization strategy, not only our European branches will suffer, but also our domestic branches will be in the dilemma: we have a lot of European citizen-customers, what will we do? Hopefully, the regulation won’t come into force!
