鲁米的全名是莫拉维·贾拉鲁丁·鲁米（Molana Jalaluddin Rumi）。当时的土耳其人称东罗马帝国为鲁姆（Rum），鲁米（Rumi）的意思就是来自东罗马帝国。他的出生地是在巴尔赫（Balkh，位于今阿富汗境内），所以他还有一个名字叫巴尔希（Balkhi），塔吉克人，但鲁米这个名字更为常用。他原名叫穆罕默德·贾拉鲁丁则是他的称号，意思是宗教圣人，后来他也被尊称为莫拉维，意思是大师、长老。下面10句名言：
