从字面上理解，“pull out”这个习惯用语指的是“拉出；拔出”的意思。事实上，它的引申义也和这个有关。如果用英语解释，“pull out”的意思是“to withdraw from something; to leave a place; to stop being involved in something”，其实就是指“退出，离开，放弃”。
在2014年6月《美国国家地理杂志》（National Geographic）中，有一篇关于越战时期美军侦查犬的文章。在这篇文章中有这样一句话：
In Vietnam an estimated 4,000 canines were used to lead jungle patrols, saving numerous lives. Nevertheless, the military decided to leave many behind when the U.S. pulled out.
句中，“pull out”就表示“撤离；撤军”。因此，这个句子可以翻译为：在越南，大约4000只狗被用作丛林侦察，它们拯救过无数的生命。但是，美军在撤离时却决定把它们留下。
除了和不同介词搭配之外，“pull”这个词还经常和人们身上的不同部位组成习惯用语。让我们从“头”说起。
人们在焦虑或烦躁的时候，可能会抓耳挠腮，有时急得恨不得把头发都拔下来。英语中，就有“pull one's hair out”的说法，指的是“extremely anxious, worried, frustrated, or stressed out about something”。
我们来看一个例句：
We've been pulling our hair out trying to figure out what's causing the server outages.
从这个例句中我们可以知道，“pull one's hair out”后面的动词必须是“ing”形式的。
汉语中，我们常说“着手做某事”，英语中也有类似的表达。当我们催促某人不要拖延，赶紧开始做某事时，我们就可以用“pull one's finger out”这个习惯用语。在英文中，它的意思是“to cease stalling or procrastinating and do something soon or at once”。
例如，I wish Mary would pull her finger out about choosing the florist she wants for the wedding.
“拉某人的手”，是要让他行动起来。但如果是“拉某人的腿”，又表示什么意思呢？
事实上，“pull one's leg”指的是“to kid, fool, or trick someone”，即“开玩笑”。
例如，Don't believe him. He's just pulling your leg.
