……其间,儿子学希腊语的过程很有意思,其实,整个学习过程就是一个阅读名著的过程。在开始学习希腊语时,他先将常见的单词背下来。因此,我专门制作了写有希腊单词和德译文字的卡片。学会了一些单词之后,他就开始阅读。先读了一本《伊索寓言》,之后又读了色诺芬著的《从军记》。在这期间,和教授其他语言一样,我没有系统地教他语法,只是随时教了他一些必要的东西。在我工作的时候,我让儿子就坐在自己桌子的旁边学习。当时,没有希腊字典,所以,当他不认识某个单词的时候,不得不一个一个地问我。尽管我工作也很忙,但我对儿子的提问,从来都是耐心讲解,从不表现出不耐烦的样子。
就这样一路学下来,小卡尔又读了希罗多德的历史学著作、色诺芬著的《宝典》《苏格拉底言行录》和提奥奇尼斯与莱尔丘斯的《哲学家列传》,以及洛西昂的著作等。把这些语言都学完时,卡尔才八岁,那时,他就已经能够读荷马、波鲁塔柯、威吉尔、西塞罗、奥夏、芬隆、弗罗里昂、裴塔斯塔济、席勒等德国、法国、意大利、希腊、罗马等各国文学大家的作品了。——摘自享誉全球的《卡尔威特的教育》
