这首诗的作者是一位普通的美国妇女，她的丈夫在女儿四岁时入伍参加越战，从此她和女儿相依为命。后来，她丈夫在战场上不幸身亡。她终身守寡，直至年老病逝。
她女儿在整理遗物时，发现了母亲当年写给父亲的这首诗。诗写的很直白很朴素，但是感人肺腑。
这首诗不是名人名作，之前没人好好翻译过，网上原有的翻译不能卒读，只好自己出手翻译了一遍，起码比网上原有的强。
