单词

• ballet
  芭蕾舞，芭蕾舞剧
     ‘Swan Lake’ is one of the great classical ballets.
     《天鹅湖》是一部伟大的古典芭蕾舞剧。

• pony
  矮种马，小型马

• demi-plié
  源自法语，注意发音是 “duh-MEE plee-AY”。芭蕾舞中的一个动作，半蹲：When you do a demi-plié, you bend your knees as far as you can while still keeping both heels planted on the ground.

• petit-jeté
  芭蕾舞中的动作，小跳，源自法语，发音为“puh-tee juh-tay”：a classical ballet term meaning “small throw.”

• grace
  优美，优雅，涵养，恩典，也可以表示宽限期，延缓期限。
     They've given me a month's grace to get the money.
     他们宽限我一个月弄到这笔钱。

• swan
  天鹅，著名的芭蕾舞剧天鹅湖《Swan Lake》。

• pas de deux
  （芭蕾舞等中的）双人舞，源自法语，单复数同形，均读作/ˌpɑː də 'dɜː/

• spaghetti
  意大利式细面条，区别于pasta（意大利面食），pasta包括意大利面，还包括通心粉等类似的面食。

• tooth fairy
  牙仙子，在英国童话里，如果儿童把脱落的牙齿放在枕下，牙仙子会在他们睡着的时候把牙齿取走，并留下硬币。

• milk tooth
  乳牙, 乳齿: Your milk teeth are the first teeth that grow in your mouth which later fall out and are replaced by a second set.

• shiny
  闪亮的，发光的，有光泽的。动词形式是shine，表示照耀，发光。
  衍生一下，glitter也有闪耀，闪烁的意思。有一句相关的谚语:
     All that glitters is not gold.
     会发光的不一定是金子。

• treasure hunt
  寻宝游戏，通过回答一些列的问题获得藏起来的奖品。这里的hunt作名词，表示“搜寻，寻找”。

• panic
  作名词表示恐慌，作动词表示使……恐慌：If you panic or if someone panics you, you suddenly feel anxious or afraid and act quickly and without thinking carefully. ( 注意过去式的拼写)
     She refused to be panicked into a hasty marriage.
     她不愿因恐慌而仓促结婚。
     News of the losses caused (a) panic among investors. *
     亏损的消息令投资者人心惶惶。*

• pirate
  海盗，比较深入人心的形象就是Johnny Depp在电影《Pirates of the Caribbean》中饰演的Captain Jack Sparrow。

• handwriting
  笔迹，笔法

• hearty
  亲切的，友好的，喧闹的，精力充沛的。
     ……a hearty welcome
     热情的欢迎

• cross
  可做动词，可做副词，也可以做名词，表示十字形，叉字形符号。中国红十字会英文名称为：Red Cross Society of China.

• arrow
  箭头（—>），箭

• chest
  除了表示胸，胸膛，还可以表示箱子，柜子.
     ……a treasure chest
     一个藏宝箱

• unlock
  用钥匙打开，释放（潜能），揭开秘密
     Education and training is the key that will unlock our nation's potential.
     教育和培训是发掘我们国家潜力的关键。

• fortune
  大笔的钱，巨款：You can refer to a large sum of money as a fortune or a small fortune to emphasize how large it is.
     Any painting by Van Gogh is worth a fortune.
     梵高的任何一幅作品都值一大笔钱。

• be meant to do sth
  理应发生的，本来就……
     I‘m meant to be on holiday.
     我原本打算去度假的。
     You're very competitive. It's meant to be a friendly match!
     你太争强好胜了，这本来就是场友谊赛！

• in return
  作为（某件事的）回报，作为报酬
     We offer an excellent all-round education to our students. In return, we expect students to work hard.
     我们向学生提供全面发展的教育，同时也希望学生努力学习。

• upside down
  副词，颠倒地，倒置地
     The painting was hung upside down.
     油画挂倒了。
  拓展一下，turn sth upside down可以表示把……弄得乱七八糟，给(某人的生活)造成了变化（或混乱）
     His sudden death turned her world upside down.
     他的骤然离世使她的生活完全乱套了。

• make sth out
  勉强地辩认出，看出，听出，英文解释为：
  If you make something out, you manage** with difficulty** to see or hear it.
     I heard the voices, but couldn't make out what they were saying.
     我听到有声音，却听不清他们在说什么。
  也可以表示把……弄清楚，弄明白，理解……
     I couldn't make it out at all.
     我一头雾水……

• hang on
  稍等一会，等会
     Hang on a sec. I will come with you.
     稍等，我和你一起去。

句子

• A place for everything and everything in its place.
  （谚语）物各有其位，物各在其位。

• Almost done.
  马上就好啦。复习一下，之前也有一个句子表示相同的意思：I am nearly finished.

• I thought as much.
  （非常地道的口语表达）我猜也是这样，不出我所料，我也这样觉得。
     ' I came to ask you a favor.' —'I thought as much.'
     “我来请你帮忙的。” “我早就料到了。”
     'Andy failed his driving test.' —'I thought as much when I saw his face.'
     “安迪没有通过驾驶考试。” “我看到他的表情就猜出个大概了。”
