join是“参加”，参加某个组织，团体，并成为其中一员，如join the army“参军”join the Party“入党”等。
attend 是正式用语，一般指参加会议、典礼、婚礼、葬礼及去听课、听报告等等上课attend class，上学attend school,听报告attend the report,看电影attend the movie
participate 指在感情、观念或行为方面与他人共同参加某一活动。常与介词in连用。
join in多指参加小规模的活动如“球赛、游戏”等，常用于日常口语。
