Lesson 40 Food and talk
Last week at a dinner-party, the hostess asked me to sit next to Mrs Rumbold. Mrs Rumbold was a large, unsmiling lady in a tight black dress. She did not even look up when I took my seat beside her. Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating. I tried to make conversation.
' A new play is coming to" The Globe" soon,' I said. 'Will you be seeing it ?' ' No,' she answered. 'Will you be spending your holidays abroad this year ?' I asked. ' No,' she answered.
' Will you be staying in England?' I asked. ' No,' she answered.
In despair, I asked her whether she was enjoying her dinner.
' Young man,' she answered,' if you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy our dinner !'

From Rumbold's View:
At a party last week, I was busy eating. An impolite young man was arranged to sit next to me. He was so boring that he asked me many many uninteresting questions. He asked me whether I would be seeing the new play and whether I would be spending my holidays abroad and whether I would be staying in England. None was of his business! In order to be polite, I replied "No" to his every question. But his action affected my mood of having a delicious meal. I told him that if he ate more and talked less then we would both have a good meal as he asked how I liked the meal.

She was interested in nothing except the food and had fixed her eyes on her plate and had been busy eating since the party began. Mr. Henry, the tall, thin man in a brown jack, was my former classmate. He was polite and loved to make new friends. He always tried to make conversion with Mrs. Rumbold but always failed.
