☞characteristic是character的形容词形式，表示“典型的；特有的”，连接宾语时要使用介词of。除了作形容词使用外，characteristic还可以作名词使用，表示“特征；特性”的意思。

Tom very often takes a nap for an hour after lunch.
汤姆常在午饭后小睡一小时。
☞take a nap这个短语同学们应该都比较熟悉了，表示“小睡”的意思。nap在这个短语中是作名词使用的。而nap其实还可以直接用作动词，同样表示“小睡”的意思。上面的例句我们可以改写成：
Tom very often naps for an hour after lunch.
汤姆常在午饭后小睡一小时。

☞你知道be caught napping是什么意思吗？从字面上来看，be caught napping是“被发现在小睡”，但是这个短语可不能只从字面意思来理解哦。be caught napping一般引申为“没有防备；一不留神；措手不及”，是一个非正式的用法：
The boss made a sudden visit to the factory, and the manager was clearly caught napping.
老板突访了工厂，经理显然措手不及。
They carried on with the plan in spite of strong objections.
尽管遭到了强烈的反对，他们还是继续这一计划。
☞carry on在上面的例句中是“继续”的意思，用with来连接宾语，如果直接连接动词的话，则需要用carry on doing something的形式。除此之外，我们还可以用go on或者continue来表示同样的含义：
They went on with the plan in spite of strong objections.
尽管遭到了强烈的反对，他们还是继续这一计划。
☞carry on还可以用来表示“开展；参与”的意思，例如：
The school will carry on a series of activities to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
学校将开展一系列活动，纪念其建校40周年。
They regard the division of labor as the effect of human wisdom.
他们认为劳动分工是人类智慧的结果。
☞labor作名词时，可以表示”劳动“的意思，所以division of labor，顾名思义，就表示“劳动分工”。labor作名词时，还可以表示“工人，劳工”的意思，如果我们用形容词或名词搭配labor的话，就可以表示各种各样的“劳工”：
skilled labor：熟练工
cheap labor：廉价劳动力
casual labor：临时工
child labor：童工

☞你知道labor under a delusion是什么意思吗？labor在这里是作动词使用，而这个短语一般用来表示“有……的错觉”。例如：
He labored under a delusion that she liked him.
他有一种她喜欢自己的错觉。
我们也可以用misconception或misapprehension来替代短语中的delusion，表达的含义不变。
