Chan Meditation with calligraphy and painting
禅,今已沦为俗滥标签。
禅字易用,禅名易附,禅式易摆,禅境难达,禅味难得,禅意难求。
禅意与书法极易搭界,中国书画由写实向写意,由画师字匠向文人画家之变,因禅学遍兴而滥觞。
禅意之“心一境胜”、“明心见性”,顿悟渐参,与书画修习极易契合。吾观历朝书坛画苑巨擘及书风画趣流变,得悟:禅意书画,必臻三境:
一曰禅之范,即书之技法,求自然浑朴,求天趣自成,求摒弃雕饰,求反对做作。
二曰禅之神,即书之内容,求禅之心性,求禅之修为,求禅之顿悟,求禅之智慧。
三曰禅之韵,即书之研习,与禅共进;书者即禅者;为人作事,真诚平实,尊真君子,拜真如来;习真功夫,长真本事;铺纸日课,磨墨禅修;书画修行,脱俗趣味;格调高古,韵致丰富;知行合一,境界自达。
Chan Buddhism has become a popular label nowadays.
The Chan Buddhism word is easy to use, the Chan Buddhism name is easy to attach, the Chan Buddhism style is easy to arrange. But the Chan Buddhism realm is difficult to reach, the Chan meditation is difficult to practice and the Chan enlightenment is hard to achieve.
The Chan Buddhism and calligraphy can be easily connected. The popularity of Chan Buddhism is exactly the reason why Chinese painting and calligraphy have changed from realism to freehand brushwork and why the practitioners have changed from craftsmen and painters to literati and artists.
The Chan meaning of "the mind wins the environment" and "the mind sees the nature", along with the insight becoming gradually involved, easily corresponds with the practice of painting and calligraphy. I have observed the changes and historical developments of the calligraphy styles and painting tastes and I have seen the great literary and artistic works of the past dynasties. I realize that if one wants to create calligraphy and painting works of Chan Buddhism, there are three levels that must be reached.
One is the Chan Buddhism style, which is the skill of the calligraphy that seeks natural simplicity and natural charm, abandons carving and opposes to affectation.
The second is the Chan Buddhism spirit, which is the content of the calligraphy, that seeks the mind of Chan Buddhism, the cultivation of Chan Buddhism, the insight of Chan Buddhism and the wisdom of Chan Buddhism.
The third is the Chan Buddhism charm, which is the study of calligraphy, that makes progress together with Chan Buddhism; calligrapher himself is a Chan Buddhist; while getting along in the world, one should be sincere and honest; be respectful for men of virtue and worship the true Buddha; learn the true Kung Fu and become proficient in the real skills; stick to daily study courses, grind the ink and practice Chan meditation every day; practice Chan Buddhism in calligraphy and painting, be detached from material things and seek a joyful taste. Pursue ancient style and differentiate the manners sensitively; keep the unity of knowledge and practice hence the Chan Buddhism level can be attained naturally.

薜荔柏佤兮蕙绸 荪桡兮兰旌
望涔阳兮极浦 横大江兮扬灵
扬灵兮未极 女婵媛兮为余太息
横流涕兮潺湲 隐思君兮陫侧
桂棹兮兰枻 斫冰兮积雪
采薜荔兮水中 搴芙蓉兮木末
心不同兮媒劳 恩不甚兮轻绝
石濑兮浅浅 飞龙兮翩翩
交不忠兮怨长 期不信兮告余以不闲
鼂骋骛兮江皋 夕弭节兮北渚
鸟次兮屋上 水周兮堂下
捐余玦兮江中 遗余佩兮澧浦
采芳兮杜若 将以遗兮下女
时不可兮再得 聊逍遥兮容与
Interpretation:
Why are you not coming? Who has detained you from leaving that isle?
I have dressed up with my gorgeous appearance and hurried to meet you in a cassia boat riding the speeding waves.
Why can’t I feel the streams of Yuan and Xiang River flowing forward? What I have felt was all the stagnation of the waters going calmly.
I have been expecting in vain and you have not appeared on time; for whom am I playing the Pandean pipes to cheer?
I take the dragon-winged boat and fleet north; I turn my way and sail to the Dong-ting lake.
I take ficus pumila as mural clothing and cymbidium as a curtain; I decorate iris sanguinea on the flagpole crank and vanilla on the top of the flag.
I look distantly from the lake to the waterfront of Cen-yang, your blazing glow glares boundlessly!
I can’t control my sadness as I can’t reach you; even the handmaids are sighing for me in pity.
I shed tears that stream down so drippingly; as I, pining for you, mourn my forlornness.
I pull cassia oars over magnolia planks, and I feel that chasing you is like chopping ice from snow banks.
Why pick ficus pumila on the stream while it grows on the hill? Why pluck lotus flower from high tree twig while it flourishes in the water?
If two people’s hearts have parted from each other, the matchmaker is useless. If the lovers’ affection is not deep, they will be easily separated.
The rapids I pass are too shallow to gurgle with a loud sound; your flitting dragons are too far to be found.
When the troth is light, the complaint must be long; since the plight is remiss, the sad rue is foregone.
At morn, I rush and ride madly by the River; at dusk, I pace on the north bank of the water.
Birds stop to perch on the thatched roofs over walls; currents of a rill wind along below the halls.
I throw your incised gem hoop near the water; and leave your jade pendant by the Li River.
I cull pollia bouquets from the green isle and give it to the handmaid.
The good occasion could not happen again; I'd better remain in carefree life at ease.

Interpretation:
The bamboos are tall and straight and the green leaves are flying up and down in the wind and sound. It looks like a beautiful and noble phoenix perching in there to play games.
The pines are strong and unyielding and the treetops are flattened by the clouds. It looks like a proud and vigorous dragon lying in there to fly high.

Interpretation:
My hands are full of green rice-seedlings and there is a paddy field waiting for plantings
My head bows down to plant them and I see the sky revealing in the water
My fertilizers are flowers and grasses and there is a rice harvest cheering for me
I walk backwards to plant them but actually I am forward at the same time

In October 2017, the Hunan Provincial Administration Academy visited the Economic Statistics Academy in Almaty, Kazakhstan and presented Xiangjun’s calligraphy work to Kazakhstan as a foreign affairs gift.

Interpretation:
Looking at the dense and flourishing Chinese parasol trees from distance, my heart cherishes the leaves more like the young phoenix’s wings.
Touching the green and exuberant pines in front, my heart loves most the rough and bursting barks like the flying dragon’s scales.

The good wine made from Xinfeng County(1) is worth ten thousand gold pieces
The dainty food in the jade plate is worth ten thousand coins
I take the wine cup and drink for the meeting and attractions we have to each other
While our horses are tethered to willows by tall buildings
