Some university teachers prefer to record their lectures before classes. In this way, students will be familiar with the lecture in advance and teachers help students practice in classes while they are watching or listening lectures. Do you think it is an effective way to learn?

With science and technology advancing in modern times, teachers resort to electronic devices more in assisting their teaching. And some teachers would rather record their lectures in advance and use the recorded lectures as materials for preview. This, however, is not a wise practice .
First of all, students’ learning efficiency cannot be guaranteed with the widespread use of recorded lectures. While it is true that the recorded classes can let students preview what is going to be discussed, not all students can be guaranteed to have watched or listened to the lectures. For one thing, students who are burdened with various tasks and assignments may find it hard to set aside extra time to watch the lectures. For another, students lacking interest in learning or having difficulty in understanding concepts may not have the motivation to listen to the videos beforehand. In either case, the students may turn out to be without a basic mastery of the main contents to be taught and consequently they will fail to fully participate in the in-class activities, not to mention the possibility that students can practice actively after being familiar with the materials.
Additionally, taking advantage of recorded lectures may put teachers at a risk. As is widely known, one of the biggest challenge that teachers face is to give timely feedback to students’ questions in actual teaching or face-to-face communication. To achieve this, teachers have to prepare their lessons based on a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of students rather than merely focusing on the teaching content itself. If all teachers are encouraged to record classes in advance, it is highly possible that they use the records of the same teaching content repeatedly. This means that they seldom consider adjusting their teaching materials according to the specific needs of different students in different classes. This is not beneficial to the improvement of teaching quality. What’s worse, if an inexperienced teacher is asked to do so, he or she may imitate others’ videos and fail to deliberate their own teaching.
To sum up, while advocating recorded lectures sounds justified at first sight, it does pose some risks and deserves reconsidering. Only when students’ preview can be thoroughly monitored and teachers can be strictly regulated can the advantages of recorded lectures stand out.
