Many young people change their jobs or careers every few years. What are the reasons for this? Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
It is true that employees prefer to get a new job when they have worked the same company for a few years. This can be explained by several reasons, and I strongly believe that it does more good than harm.
People choose to resign are meant to learn something new. After couple years as an entry level worker, it is not very promising about when to get promoted or have a big raise. But with certain skills in a new company, the salary could be doubled. When the corporation gets bigger, political bureaucracies could get in the way of efficient execution and smooth team collaboration. It is the time to pivot to a fast growing environment to polish technical skills. Sometimes our true passion is not that obvious, but keeping exploring is more likely to eventually find the career we love deeply.
The advantages of experiencing different jobs are tremendous. Firstly, there are all kinds of different colleagues we can meet in the workplace. The more people we know, the better resources we will have in our lives. Secondly, in order to adapt into a new environment, we have to be able to dealing with ambiguity and learn faster, which keeps us sharp and energetic. Finally, for the enterprise, an employee's performance during those years proves if they are suited to a better position, and if not, the leaving can actually give chances to others to come and try.
In conclusion, changing jobs every few years becomes a trend for multiple reasons, and I have no doubt that the advantages outweighs its disadvantages.
