Lesson25 Do the English speak English?
I arrived in London at last. The railway station was big, black and dark. I did not know the way to my hotel, so I asked a porter. I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well. The porter, however, could not understand me; I repeated my question several times and at last he understood. He answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly. 'I am a foreigner,' I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that! The porter and I looked at each other and smiled. Then he said something and I understood it. 'You'll soon learn English!' he said. I wonder. In England, each man speaks a different language. The English understand each other, but I don't understand them! Do they speak English?

From A Hotel Waiter's View:
Yesterday, I received a customer from China guided by a local porter. He complained to me about the big difference between English accents. According to him, each man speaks a different language in my country and we can understand each other but he could not understand us at all. He told me that he learned English in his country but his teachers did not speak English like that. He did not know the way to this hotel after he arrived London. He asked the porter with a careful and clear pronunciation. The porter did not understand him until he had repeated his question several times. Then he didn't understand what the porter said even the porter spoke slowly. At last, the porter had no idea and took him to the hotel.

One day, a young passenger like an Asian asked me the way to Bridge Hotel. I didn't understand him even if he spoke the question very hard and repeated several times. His English was terribly bad.
