Once upon a time, there was a mischievous young boy who was given the task of tending a herd of sheep on a hillside near a village.    从前,有一个淘气的小男孩,他被派去一个村子附近的山坡上照看一群羊。

The boy grew tired and bored while watching the sheep, so he found ways to amuse himself, such as climbing trees or chasing sheep.    这个男孩在看羊的时候变得又累又无聊,所以他想办法消遣自己,比如爬树或追羊。

One day he came up with what he thought was a brilliant idea.    一天,他想出了一个他认为很好的主意。

        mischievous    [ˈmɪstʃɪvəs]    = 淘气的

        a herd of sheep= 一群羊

When the villagers heard his cries for help, they rushed up the hill to rescue him and chase the wolf away.    村民们听到他的呼救声,就冲上山去救他,把狼赶走。

Of course, when they got there, there was no wolf to be seen, and the boy, who was still in the tree, was laughing.    当然,当他们到达那里时,没有看到狼,而那个还在树上的男孩正在笑。

The sheep were grazing peacefully. Annoyed, the villagers returned to the village and back to their normal activities.    羊正在安静地吃草。村民们很恼火,回到了村子里,恢复了正常的活动。

This time the villagers were furious at the boy. That night he was punished by his mother for his bad behavior.    这一次,村民们对这个男孩大发雷霆。那天晚上他因行为不端而受到母亲的惩罚。

        grow bored= 感到厌烦,感到无聊

        play trick on sb.= 开某人的玩笑;捉弄某人

        be furious at sb.= 对某人感到恼怒

        be punished by= 被……惩罚了

        bad behavior= 不良行为

For a while after that, life went on as normal and the boy behaved, he didn't want to be punished again.    在那之后的一段时间里,生活照常进行,男孩表现得很好,他不想再受到惩罚。

Then, one afternoon while he was tending the sheep, he noticed that the sheeps were bleating and nervous.    一天下午,当他在照看羊的时候,他注意到羊在咩咩叫,很紧张。

The wolf, having nothing to fear, feasted on several of the sheep and then slipped back into the forest.    狼无所畏惧,吃了几只羊,然后溜回了森林。
