Today is Wednesday.
It is the International Women's Day. Do you know why it's on March 8th? Actually the earliest Women's Day activity was not held on that day, or even it hadn't been held on a fixed day for a few years before 1914. The possible reason that the Women's Day was held on March 8 in 1914 was that it was a Sunday so that the women workers were free to take part in some activities to celebrate that day. Maybe some of you don't know five-day-work-week hasn't existed for a long time.
In 1917 USSR proclaimed it as a holiday and from 1922 it was celebrated by communists in China. Whe people's republic of China was set up in 1949, it was proclaimed as an offical holiday for women workers given a half-day off. And in the West, it was considered as a public event until the UN proclaimed it in 1977.
Happy Women's Day!
