Time flies fast, and the first five levels of our English course have come to an end in a blink of an eye. First of all, if you’ve been taking part in every class all the way, I would like to congratulate you here, and I believe you must have improved your English skills in a way more than you can imagine. However, there is no ending in learning any languages, because language itself is the crystallization of culture and wisdom in all walks of life for the past thousands of years. That is why, for this unit summary, I want to share with you five habits to learning English well, so that I can provide some useful guidance for your English learning and application in the future.

时光飞逝，转眼之间我们前五个阶段的英语课程就接近尾声了。首先，如果你一路坚持学到了这里，那么恭喜你，相信你在英语方面取得的进步已经超出了你的想象。但是任何语言的学习都没有终点，因为语言本身就是各行各业在过去千百年来文化、智慧的结晶。正因如此，我想在这个单元总结里为你分享学好英语的五个习惯，为你接下来的英语学习和运用提供一点有用的引导。

Habit 1: Create a kind of English environment around you

Like learning any skill, learning a language requires continuous practice. The biggest reason why most people forget what they’ve learned is that they can't apply the English from textbooksinto their daily life. To solve this problem, I suggest that you make English a necessary tool for you in your everyday life. For example, you can set the language of your mobile phone, computer, car entertainment system and other common electronic devices to English mode, orset alarm clocks and memos by commanding your voice assistant in the mobile phone using English. In addition, you can watch English movies or TV shows and turn it into a part of your entertainment activities, so that English can appear around your life as often as possible.Jascha Heifetz, the Russian-American violinist once said: If I don't practice one day, I know it; two days, the critics know it; three days, the public knows it. Always remember: Practice is the key to perfection.

习惯一、在身边创造一种英语环境

和学习任何技能一样，学习语言需要持续的练习。大多数人学英语之所以会遗忘，最大的原因就是他们在日常生活里用不上课本里的英语。要解决这个问题，我建议你让英语变成你日常生活里的一个必备工具。比如把你的手机、电脑、车载娱乐系统等常见的电子设备的语言设置成英语模式，或者平时设置闹钟、备忘录等也都可以通过对手机里英语版的语音助理下达命令来完成。另外，你可以把看英语电影、电视剧等变成自己的一部分娱乐活动，让你的生活里尽可能多地出现英语。

俄裔美国小提琴家雅沙·海飞兹曾经说过：一天不练习，我自己就知道我退步了；两天不练习，我的批评者们就知道我退步了；三天不练习，大家就都知道我退步了。永远记住：练习是通向完美的关键。

Habit 2: Read English books matching your current English level

The easiest way to use English is to read English books. It's a very pleasant experience choosing an English book you are interested in and reading it in a quiet corner. Also, The process of reading is mostly silent, which means your brain will have more time to understand and think, which is extremely important for you to cultivate your ability to think in English. However, for beginners or people with limited English proficiency, I will not recommend you thethick English novels, especially theclassic ones, because many of the words used in such novels are selected with the certain historical background and not suitable for many life scenes nowadays. You can try to choose some modern popular books, such as books related to Self-improvement, Relationships, Biographies, etc, which are all very good materials. In another course of mine, the National English Recitation Camp, I have recommended many similar books for you.

习惯二、阅读符合你目前英语水平的英语书

最简单的使用英语的方式，就是读英语原版书。挑选一本自己感兴趣的英语书，在一个安静的角落里读一读，是一种非常愉悦的体验。同时，因为阅读大多是无声的，你的大脑会有更多理解和思考的时间，这就对你培养英语思维非常有利。但是，对于初学者或者英语水平有限的人来讲，我并不推荐你读厚厚的英语小说，尤其是经典小说，因为这类小说使用的很多措辞都是根据特定的时代背景而选用，并不适用于当代的一些生活场景。你可以试着挑选一些现代的流行读物，比如自我提升类、人际关系类、传记类等等，这些都是非常不错的选材。我在我的另一套课程《全民英语背诵营》里，就为大家推荐过很多类似的书籍。

Habit 3: Develop a hobby that is inseparable from English

I used to like photography, so I would regularlybuy some English magazinesrelated to photography, like National Geographics. In this way, Ihave improvedmy professional knowledge in photography as well as my skill in English. Similarly, I’ve been playing computer or console games since I was a kid. At present, the default language of a large number of top games is still English. Therefore, if I want to play smoothly without language barriers, a good command of English is also a must. You can also think about how to integrate English into your hobbies. If you don't have such a hobby, you might as well try to develop one.

习惯三、培养一个与英语密不可分的爱好

我以前喜欢摄影，所以我会定期买一些和摄影相关的英语杂志来看，比如《国家地理》。这样既可以提升摄影方面的专业知识，自己的英语水平又得到了提高。同样的道理，我从小就喜欢玩电脑游戏或者主机游戏，而目前大量的顶尖游戏默认语言仍然是英语，所以如果我想要没有语言障碍一路畅快地玩下去，很好的英语能力也是必不可少的。你也可以想想怎样把英语融入到你的爱好里。如果你没有这样的爱好，不妨试着培养一个。

Habit 4: Keep an English diary or write informal essays

Many people are used to writing down their recent life or work from time to time, or posting their thoughts and activities on the network platform, etc. You can try to write them in English, because this is a good way to test your ability of expression. Unlike passive input of English, you can know how to choose words and sentences to express your feelings better by active output of English, just like what Russian writer Anton Chekhov once said: Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice.

习惯四、写英语日记或随笔

很多人习惯不定期地用文字记录一下自己最近的生活或工作，或者在网络平台发表一下自己的感想、动态等等。你可以尝试用英语来写，因为这是一个很好的检测你英语表达能力的方式。和被动输入英语不一样，通过主动输出英语，你会了解自己到底如何遣词造句才能把你的感情表达得更好。就像俄国作家安东·契诃夫说的那样：只有付诸实践的知识才是有用的知识。

Habit 5: The best habit lies in your subconscious

Sometimes I talk in my dream, and my family tell me that they often hear me speak English. This is a very interesting thing, because it shows that Chinese and English have both becometoolsto express myself in my subconscious. I sometimes fall asleep when watching English programs. But before deep sleep, my subconscious mind will make up the picturesaccording to the content I hear, as if I can see the plot on TV with my eyes closed. These experiences are not intentional, but a natural result from the many habits in my daily life. For an English learner, it is difficult to have such a habit, because it means that you may have to develop the first four habits in the first place. But learning a language is the same as doing anything. Only enough efforts can bring rich results.

习惯五、最好的习惯在你的潜意识里

我在睡觉的时候偶尔会说梦话，而且家里人告诉我说，他们经常听到我在睡觉的时候讲英语。这是一件很有趣的事情，因为这说明英语和汉语都已经成为了我潜意识里的表达工具。我有时候在看英语节目的时候会睡着，但是进入深度睡眠之前，我的潜意识会结合听到的节目内容脑补画面，好像我闭着眼睛也能看到电视里的情节一样。这些经历都不是刻意的，而是我在日常生活里众多习惯所引出的一个顺其自然的结果。对于一个英语学习者来说，能够有这样的习惯是比较难的，因为这意味着你可能要首先养成前四个习惯。但学语言和做任何事情一样，只有足够的付出才会有丰硕的成果。
