读书一点点，
解不开二十四史千千结，
参不透美人芳草晶莹雪。
多半是一知半解其中味，
造不成勾心斗角黄金屋，
攀不上庙堂宝殿白玉阶。
金戈铁马，
遗落在书香晨雾西沉月；
经世致用，
风雨里拌沙土填坑补路缺。
说道是齐家，
常打破锅碗瓢盆醉花碟；
大言要治国，
撰不成抚远安邦万字帖。
对着那三月花，
掉书袋引不来恋花蝶，
听着那夜莺曲，
接不上铿锵玫瑰音韵协。
云卷云舒在眼前，
惊世功业撼五岳——
唉——
要赞，
出口粗鄙无光焰；
想夸
辞不达意失和谐。
无可奈何心意懒，
跌坐在夕阳下，
头顶着南飞雁影斜。
一部无名书，
陪我到子夜，
一逗连一句，
一行复一页。

Reading a Little Bit
Reading a bit, as days flit,
Can't untie the Twenty-Four Histories' knotty fit,
Nor fathom beauty where fragrant grass and crystal snow sit.
Half-grasped flavors, a constant hit,
No golden house of schemes to knit,
No jade steps to the palace, a distant wit.
Gold-clad cavalry's clang,
In bookish mist and west- set moon, does hang;
Statecraft for life’s true gain,
In wind and rain, with sand to fill roads’ rough stain;
Of household care, we prate,
Breaking bowls, drunk, like butterflies of tragic fate;
Of state rule, we vaunt to create,
No grand scrolls for peace, a helpless gait.
Before March flowers, we stand,
Bookish lures can't catch butterflies' mand;
Beneath nightingales' band,
No rose-like rhythm, a disjointed strand.
Clouds roll and spread, a sight,
Stunning deeds shake mountains, a might!
Alas , in plight
To praise, coarse words like dim light;
To commend ,
thoughts fail, losing right.
Helpless, heart's a blight.
Sitting cros-legged, sun's last light,
South-flying geese' shadow, a slanting flight.
An unnamed book, till midnight, stays,
A sentence paused, in silent lays,
Line after line, page after page, in haze.

1. 作者作品简介
朱夫子八旬翁, 毕业于复旦大学历史系，教师，诗人，出版过《月亮与菊花》(北京教育出版社) 和其它诗集，涵盖古诗词、仿元曲和现代诗三部分。
这首现代诗以质朴笔触写读书的平凡与真实，褪去功利执念，道尽一知半解的怅然，却守得子夜翻书的安然。
2. 汉英格律说明
原诗一气呵成未作分段，主用“皆”（ie ue) 韵；而译诗则根据句意分成几个段落，每段采取同一韵式助读。

7. Gold-clad calvery's clang:
披金甲的骑兵队伍叮当作响，以此句意译"金戈铁马"。

9. rough stain: 坑洼不平的痕迹
10. Of household care , we prate：我们常唠叨自己会治家。（原诗"说道是齐家"), prate 唠叨，用其意兼押韵。
